Nor’easter update

The extremely powerful nor’easter scheduled for Sunday will hit Saturday night will drop 4-8 inches along the coast with slightly higher amounts inland.

This is a VERY hard forecast with most of the global models pointing to a potent storm undergoing cyclogenesis around 40N 70W with heavy snow bands wrapping onshore late saturday night. The proximity to land and exact track will play a VERY important role in the  forecast for snow and wind. A more westerly track will limit the snowfall totals due to rain changeover. If this westerly track were to play out than we would have a potentially historic ice storm on our hands.

If the system were to track slightly east than the coast would see a lot of snow with totals approaching a foot or more. This track is suggested by the GFS and WRF models

We will have to see what track plays out and I will post updates as needed.

Tropical uppdate as of 5am EDT 10.27.11

As of 5 Rina is still a hurricane with 75 mph sustained winds. The system is very disorganized and only has a scap of an eyewall left. The storm is headed for the yucatan peninsula.

Sat map as of 6am EDT 10.27.11

Still active with a disorganized Rina, a shortwave over the US, 97L in the central carribean, and a powerful N atlantic storm by greenland

A stormy day

Well here we go. We have rain, some heavy moving in. This will help the cold air to filter down from the higher levels of the atmosphere. After a day of rain we will get some snow overnight. There will be no accumulation. The storm will be gone by Friday.

Storm updates

As I look at the models again I see that the storm tomorrow will be a little bigger than origionally thought. Not by much but this one will at least have some small accumulations. By small I mean >1-1 inch at the coast with 1-3 in the foothills and 2-4 in the larger mountains.

It looks like the storm previosly predicted to hit this weekend will stay out to sea.

Stay tuned
