Sunny and cold today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature clear skies and cold temps. Winds shouldn’t be all that bad in the 5-10 mph range. Temps today will top out in the 10’s inland and the low 20’s at the coast.

With regards to our storm on Monday, It looks like it will actually be too cold for snow. When we have really cold temps like we do now, we can blame a big area of high pressure sitting over us. Come Monday, this high will act like a bubble pushing the storm well south.

This storm will have a very big impact to our south though. Philly, NYC, Hartford, and Boston all have a good shot at 8″+ falling Sunday evening through Monday evening.

Snow squalls return

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the return of some snow squalls just like Yesterday except they will be more spread out today so some areas could see nothing at all. Temps will again be in the low 20’s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Tomorrow is the beginning of a several day stretch without any storms or chances for snow. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning look pretty good with sunny skies but cool temps. Sunday afternoon, clouds increase ahead of our next storm.

There are a lot of rumors about the storm right now with model maps and snow forecasts flying around twitter and some of them are outright absurd. It is far too early for anyone to talk about snowfall amounts. Here are my thoughts on how it will all play out. Keep in mind, this is still 3-4 days out so there is definitely room for change but confidence is pretty good with all the models agreeing on some sort of storm.

As of now, the storm (if it forms and tracks right) will move into the NYC area Sunday afternoon/evening and spread snow, wind, and bad travel conditions northward through New England Sunday night. Here in Northern New England, expect snow to move in Monday morning and become moderate or heavy as the day goes on. Winds could pick up as well.

This will be a long duration event so snow will linger into Tuesday in Maine and New Hampshire. Everything moves out Tuesday afternoon and NW wind will usher in some even colder air for the rest of the week.

Brief but very heavy snow today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature very brief but very heavy snow associated with snow squalls. Snowfall rates could reach or maybe exceed 3″/hr and 15-20 mph winds could cause brief whiteout conditions. Despite the extremely heavy snow, it will last for only 20-30 minutes and accumulations should be minor with most spots getting less than an inch. These snow squalls will occur in the early afternoon. Temps will be in the low 20’s.

Tomorrow we do this all over again with more snow squalls and brief whiteout conditions. Friday is the break in the action and light snow returns Saturday. More snow is possible Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. I see no big storms in the 7 day. In addition to that, I do not see a shot at the freezing mark in the 7+ day.

Welcome back to winter!

Hello Everyone!

Weather you like it or not, winter is back with cold temps and of course, snow. Starting with today, we have mostly sunny skies to look forward to in the morning but clouds and possibly a few flurries  could build in for the afternoon. Temps will be in the 20’s region-wide.  Tomorrow, the chance of snow dramatically increases as a low pressure system will be passing offshore. An inch or two of accumulation is possible. Our next chance for light snow arrives Saturday followed by another chance for snow next Monday.

Cold returns with a bang today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature phase 1 of the return of winter as promised. A cold NW wind will usher in cold air so temps stay where they are for most of the day. Winds will gust over 20 mph at times so temps will feel colder in the afternoon compared to the morning. I see no big storms in sight however we have 2 chances for light snow, one on Wednesday and one on Saturday.

Warmth continues today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature partly to mostly cloudy skies due to a weak storm passing to our south. This will bring the chance for some light snow/sleet/freezing rain depending on where you are. Accumulations will not be hefty but roads will become rather slippery for a time. This chance gets larger the farther south you are. Temps will be in the 30’s north and close to 40 south so it will be another warm one. Enjoy it while it lasts though because we’re back in the deep freeze next week with 2 chances of snow.

Warm and sunny today

Hello everyone!

Today will really feel like spring as sunny skies rule and 40 degree temps become common. Some spots in southern Maine could hit 50! Enjoy it while it lasts though as March looks to come in like a very very mad lion. Expect bitter cold to end out February and welcome in March. I do not see any significant snow in our future.

Mix changing to rain today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a warm and wet conditions as a cold front approaches. Temps will get to near 40 at the coast and the mid 30’s inland.

Precipitation will start as a steady snowfall but will be quick to change to a plethora of precip types including but not limited to freezing rain, sleet, and graupel (Icy snowy pellety things). By mid to late morning, the coast will be all rain, the foothills will be mixed precip and it will still be snowing in the mountains.

By lunchtime, the coast will have rain showers, the foothills will be changing from mix to rain and in the mountains it will still be snowing. I think the mountains get 2-4″ of snow although the higher peaks will get 3-6″ before changing to sleet around 1.

The cold front hits like a wall this evening with heavy precip, high winds, and possibly thunder. Winds then turn to the WSW and usher in cooler air. Clearing skies can also be expected tonight.

Tomorrow features the last day of warm temps under sunny skies. Another cold front comes through Saturday afternoon with significantly less fanfare than this one.

We’re back below normal temperature wise next week as a piece of the polar vortex heads into southern Canada. Our next chance for snow arrives Wednesday.

Warm-up begins today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the beginning of our much publicized warm-up. Temps will rise into the 30’s inland and the 40’s at the coast. West winds off the mountains will make for sunny skies as our new snow melts. 40’s continue tomorrow with rain and possibly thunder. Cool air returns over the weekend with subfreezing conditions happily cemented in place for next week.

More snow today, warm-up tomorrow

Hello everyone!

Today will feature more snow and possibly mix/rain at the coast. Precipitation should move in mid afternoon and will remain light/moderate over Southern Maine and New Hampshire. As the low deepens, snow will increase in intensity over Downeast sections.

Snow map 2-19

Snow map.

Temps today will be in the low 30’s inland and low to mid 30’s at the coast. Rain/snow will move out this evening into tonight.

Freezing rain will take hold of the area Thursday night into Friday morning before turning to all rain. This will make for a VERY slippery morning commute Friday especially with some towns dealing with a salt shortage.

Cold air returns with some light snow Sunday. Cold air will be firmly locked in next week and the threat of a coastal storm will be there all next week though there is no specific threat as of now.
