Cool And Calm Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cooler temps and calm weather as Canadian high pressure builds in from the west. Skies this morning are mostly sunny outside of some high clouds over Southern areas and a few lower clouds in the far north. Expect more high clouds to filter in from the south as the day goes on, but otherwise there should be plenty of sunshine to go around. Temps today will range from 65 in the north to 75 in the south with low humidity. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Weak Cold Front Crosses The Region Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the passage of a weak cold front currently located across Upstate NY. Ahead of the front, you’ll notice clouds increase this morning along with warm SW winds. The front itself has some shower activity associated with its northern half. This is expected to arrive in northern NH and adjacent parts of NW Maine around/a little after noon. A few rumbles of thunder are possible but otherwise these look pretty tame. The chance for a brief shower or storm also exists farther to the south, but the closer to the coast you get, the drier you’ll generally stay.

The front will exit quickly this evening with sunshine redeveloping from west to east. High temps today will range from around 70 in the north to the low 80’s in Southern NH.

Improving Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature improving weather as a cold front slowly moves east of the region. Radar imagery this morning shows shower activity departing the northern mountains and the midcoast with drier air to the west. One more batch of rain near Boston may clip the midcoast on its way east over the next few hours, but otherwise we should be mostly dry as the sun comes up.

Satellite imagery shows the back edge of this system’s cloud cover moving through NH as of 5:45 AM. That means that western parts of our area will see a pleasant day with patchy morning valley fog burning off to afternoon sunshine. The rest of us will see a few overcast hours this morning before sunshine takes over for the afternoon. The farther east you are, the longer it will take for the sunshine to get to you.

High temps today will range from around 70 in the north to around 80 in SW NH. Humidity will stay on the higher side until drier air arrives this evening.

Clouds Increase Today Ahead Of Approaching Cold Front

Hello everyone!

Today will feature increasing cloud cover as a cold front approaches from the west. The front will be siphoning some tropical moisture from TS Erin, located well offshore, as it approaches the area which means that once the rain starts this evening, it will be very heavy. As far as timing for rain goes, expect a start time in the late afternoon (4 PM ish) across Southern NH, the mid evening (7-8 PM) in Central NH and SW ME, and later in the evening (9-11 PM) for points farther north and east. The rain tonight will feature embedded thunder, but no severe weather. If you have a basement that floods easily, today is a great time to dust off the sump pump and check to make sure your system is working properly.

As far as temps go today, they’ll be warmer than recent days ranging from a few degrees above 70 in the northeastern part of Maine to a few degrees above 80 in SW NH. You’ll also notice an uptick in humidity especially this evening as dew points rise above the 60 degree threshold.

Drier weather returns tomorrow.

Nice Weather Continues Today

Hello everyone!

If you’ve been enjoying the weather we’ve seen over the past few days, you’re in luck because today looks very similar in terms of clear skies, cool temps, and low humidity. A low pressure system over the Canadian Maritimes will try to throw a few high clouds our way today, but otherwise most of us will remain sunny. Look for high temps in the 70-75 degree range across the area with continued low humidity. Get outside and enjoy another day of beautiful weather!

The Beautiful COol Weather Continues Today

Hello everyone!

Our recent stretch of beautiful weather will continue today as we remain under the influence of strong Canadian high pressure. Expect another day of cool temps, low humidity, northeasterly breezes, and higher afternoon cloud cover. Expect high temperatures to range from a little below 70 in the north to a little above 70 in the south. Skies will start sunny this morning, but a shield of mid/high level clouds is already moving our way from Nova Scotia as an ocean storm develops near Sable Island. These clouds will overspread the area from east to west during the day today. Given very dry air in the low levels, any rain that falls from these clouds will evaporate about 6,000 feet above our heads, so it’ll be another great day to get outside. Enjoy!

More Nice Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today’s weather will continue the trend set by recent days with cool temps, low humidity, and dry skies. Yesterday we saw a bit more cloud cover than expected due to cool air aloft. That cool air will stick around for today, so morning sunshine will become at least partially obscured by cumulus this afternoon. Temperatures will remain firmly in the awesome-for-August range with highs around 65 in the north and a little above 70 in the south. All that to say, today’s a great day to do whatever outdoor activity/activities you enjoy the most!

Really Nice Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature some really nice weather as Canadian high pressure builds into the region from the north. Look for sunny skies in the north and a few more clouds in the south closer to yesterday’s cold front. Aside from a brief shower in southern NH, we’ll stay dry today. Temperatures will be really nice for August, ranging from 65 in the north to 75 in the south. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

More Unsettled Summer Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature another day of warm weather with the chance for some showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Before we can think too much about the storms, we’ll need to burn off some low clouds and fog currently in place across parts of Maine and the valleys of New Hampshire. With SW winds developing this morning, fog and low clouds should lift on the sooner side.

As the sun comes out, temps will rise to around 70 in the north and a little shy of 90 in Southern NH. These warm temps along with some residual moisture following yesterday’s storms will provide fuel for another round of showers and storms this afternoon. These will initially pop up in the mountains midday before moving east during the afternoon. The most favorable environment for storms will be along the coastal plain, and the chance for damaging wind gusts will be higher here. Overall, today’s severe threat will be on the lower side but still worth paying attention to if you happen to be outside. Storms will exit to the east this evening with drier air filtering in from Canada.

As a quick aside, what happened to the storms yesterday that just never really showed up? Storms need warm air to thrive, and the warm air yesterday was locked up behind a warm front. That front was forecast to lift northward to around Waterville/Augusta, but got stuck around Portsmouth NH. As a result, most of the area ended up with showers that had a rumble or two of thunder but no severe weather (except for a couple cells down in southern NH). Warm fronts are known to struggle moving north through our area in the winter/spring, but they typically make more progress during the summer without snow to slow them down. My guess is that yesterday’s forecast error resulted from a little disturbance in the mid levels that reinforced the cool side of the front with showers. The rain-cooled outflow from those showers added cold air to the north side of the front which made it harder for the warm air to move forward, thus preventing storms from getting too strong outside of SW NH.
