Happy Torchmas Eve! Toasty Temps Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature record high temps across parts of the area but Cold Air Damming is likely to keep the foothills cooler. Look for highs in the 60’s south of Portland, 50’s for the rest of the coast and mountains, and 40’s in inland areas. There is a strong inversion in place today which means that while temps aloft are quite warm, we will have a hard time making full use of them at the surface as colder air is locked in down here. Temps will likely jump in the afternoon as the inversion breaks and if this break occurs earlier, look for warmer temps. Clouds and fog will also inhibit the sun from having tons of impact. Look for fog to develop especially along the coast today and it could be dense at times.

Another Fairly Warm Day By December Standards

Hello everyone!

Today will feature warmer temps once again as the El-Nino dominated pattern continues to place very warm air behind ‘cold’ fronts. Look for highs in the low to mid 40’s north with upper 40’s to mid 50’s south. Fog will be dense this morning and may have a hard time burning off but eventually should burn off by around noon. There are some spots below freezing this morning so watch for black ice as well. Don’t expect too much sun after the fog heads out, our next storm is arriving today with clouds and rain by late afternoon.

Cold And Rainy Today

Hello everyone!

Looks like even Mother Nature is grumpy about the lack of snow. Unfortunately, El-Nino is prohibiting her from taking much action there and instead she’s created quite a nasty cocktail of weather today. Look for temps in the mid 30’s north and upper 30’s to low 40’s south with moderate rain today. The only thing really missing would be wind and today’s winds will likely remain in the 5-15mph range out of varying directions as low pressure develops over us. Rain will last throughout the day before tapering to showers tonight. We get a brief break tomorrow morning before more rain tomorrow night. Record high temps follow for Christmas Eve.

Warmer And Cloudier Today

Today will feature partial sun as high clouds build in. Expect highs in the 40’s for most, 50’s south. Winds will be noticeable but not strong out of the SW as well.

Cool and Clear Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature mainly sunny skies and cool temps as high pressure moves in. Winds will be gusty this morning but will slowly relax as low pressure moves east. Highs will range from the 20s north to low 30s south. Winds could gust over 25mph at times.

Clear and Finally Cooler Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature mainly clear skies and cooler conditions. Expect breezy conditions as well as cold air moves in with gusts over 30mph possible. Snow showers will be plentiful in the mountains today and flurries are possible everywhere.

Cool And Cloudy Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cool and cloudy conditions as a front hangs just offshore. Fog will also be widespread this morning but will gradually burn off to just plain cloudy skies. Highs will range from the upper 30’s north to the mid 40’s south.

Today marks the first day of Christmas break and as such updates will be a tad later in the morning. Normal updates resume January 4.

AM Freezing Rain PM Normal Rain

Hello everyone!

We have some freezing rain/drizzle this morning as a front approaches from the west. Expect this to continue through mid-morning at the coast and in southern areas while lasting through most of the afternoon up north.  Freezing rain advisories are up for the entire area so be sure to take it slow this morning and watch for patchy slick spots.

Temps warm up this afternoon and freezing drizzle/rain gives way to normal drizzle/rain which will continue into tonight. Highs will rise into the 30’s north and 40’s south which will make this rain particularly unpleasant.

Colder air finally shows up for a brief stay this weekend before the torch turns on again next week.

Winter will rise again.

Clear And Cool Today

Hello everyone!

More calm weather today as high pressure builds in from the north. Expect highs near 40 south and closer to 30 north with sunny skies. Winds will be noticeable out of the north this morning but will eventually relax as we get towards afternoon.

Starting Dreary Ending Mild And Windy

Hello everyone!

A pretty dreary morning is in store today as a front lingers over the area and low pressure develops offshore. Expect continued drizzle/rain especially east through the morning before drier air works in. When the dry air does come, you’ll feel it. Downsloping will spike temps to near 60 at the coast and clouds and drizzle will fade to sun. Clouds will linger more in the mountains as the influence of downsloping will be less significant. For an explanation of downsloping and it’s impacts on the weather in Maine, check out my column in UpPortland (once the page loads, the article is on page 19). Temps  in the mountains will likely get up into the 40’s except far northern areas who will see temps in the 20’s and 30’s with freezing rain changing to snow. Maine’s got it all in terms of weather today!
