First off, let me tell you how happy it makes me to use the words “coastal storm” in a July forecast. It’s pretty fun. That’s what we’re going to get to enjoy today as low pressure has already developed and is moving NE just south of Long Island. An area of thunderstorms just south of this low is eating up some of the moisture associated with the system and thus robbing us of the potential for any really heavy rain. However, light to moderate rain will be widespread today along with a raw ENE wind. This wind will keep temps limited to the upper 50’s/low 60’s throughout the day today. After several days in the 90’s with high humidity, I’m thinking this is going to feel pretty awesome!
A cool and generally unsettled pattern is expected to dominate for the foreseeable future.
Nearly everything about today will be perfect, weather wise. First and most importantly, the humidity will be low. Dew points will drop into the low 50’s! Temps will rise into the mid 70’s along the coast and the low 80’s inland. Skies this morning will be full of sunshine though a few clouds will be developing this evening. A few showers are likely to develop this afternoon over the mountains where cold air aloft combined with mild temps at the surface will result in some weak instability developing. Winds will be out of the north, turning northeast this evening. The heatwave is broken!
A coastal storm is likely to bring more rain tomorrow though its exact track will determine if the heaviest precip remains to our south and east.
A slow but steady cooling and drying trend is beginning today. Sunny skies will dominate as another weak cold front rotates through the area. A couple scattered showers or potentially a weak storm could form along this front but given the lack of moisture, they won’t be too widespread. Speaking of the lack of moisture, it will feel much better today than recent days. Dew points are heading into the 50’s as westerly winds bring in drier air. As for temps, they’ll rise into the 80’s for most with low 90’s in the far south.
By Monday, we’ll be in the 60’s for temps with a northeast wind and heavy rain as a coastal storm passes offshore!
Today will still feature temps that are quite toasty but the humidity situation will be substantially improved as dew points fall into the 50’s for much of the region. The reason we’re enjoying the drier weather is that a cold front rolled through last night. If you live in southern York County or just north of Augusta, you got a thunderstorm to announce this, but, for most of us, the front was much stealthier. In any case, expect temps to rise into the low 90’s across southwestern areas with mid to upper 80’s in the north and along the coast where a sea breeze will develop but will be limited due to westerly large scale winds. A widely scattered shower or storm is possible once again this afternoon as another cold front rolls through. The best chance for a storm will be across northeastern parts of the region.
If you like sweating in your seat, needing scuba gear to walk outside, and cooking eggs on the dash of your car, today, like yesterday, will be for you. Temperatures are once again making a beeline for the “disgusting” category as actual temps rise into the mid 80’s and lower 90’s. Dew points will hover right around 70 making it feel like the mid to upper 90’s for nearly everyone. Skies will remain mostly sunny across the area with a few more clouds developing this afternoon. As for precipitation, today will follow in yesterday’s footsteps with widely scattered showers and storms developing this afternoon. Likely only one or two will form, but the ones that do (if they do) could bring a few gusty winds.
More disgusting weather is on the way today as a polar low pressure system over Hudson Bay is asleep at the wheel, letting the Bermuda high expand northwestward, albeit briefly. The result will be nasty heat and humidity. A boundary will be present across the area that will decide who gets what nastiness. West of the boundary? Congratulations! You get to enjoy temps in the low to mid 90’s but you’re dew points will “only” be in the low 60’s. East of the boundary? Your temps will, by comparison, be quite chilly. Only in the low 80’s! Your dew points, however, will be enough to make anyone long for a good blizzard as they rise into the outrageously oppressive lower 70’s.
So where will this boundary set up? The Swiss HD model has a good handle on the approximate area. It will waver back and forth but should remain well entrenched along the coastal plain. Along the boundary, an isolated shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out but as with the past few days, they will remain widely scattered, if they even develop at all.
Today will feature a mix of sun and clouds along with the chance for more scattered showers and storms. A few storms have popped up already, just north and east of Augusta. More storms will develop farther south and west this afternoon but a lack of energy aloft will mean that most, if not all, storms will remain safely below severe limits though any and all storms can produce dangerous lightning and torrential rains. The best chance of storms will be across the coastal plains and outside of the mountains as a very weak frontal boundary is located across these areas that will help to provide a little bit of a trigger to get storms going. Highs will rise into the low 80’s across the area as morning clouds give way to more sunshine this afternoon.
Today will feature more warm and humid weather along with showers and thunderstorms as another weak cold front approaches the region. Look for storms to begin developing later this morning and into this afternoon across the mountains before they move south and east this afternoon and into this evening. In the absence of strong dynamics aloft, there isn’t a widespread threat for severe weather but gusty winds and small hail could present an issue in a few of the stronger cells that develop. Remember that heavy rain and lightning are dangerous even if a thunderstorm isn’t severe. Highs will range from 85 inland to 70 along the midcoast, where foggy conditions are likely to linger for much of the day. Partly to mostly sunny skies are expected elsewhere before the thunderstorms develop.
Today will feature warmer temps and sunnier skies as another cold front lazily drifts in our direction. Look for patchy dense fog this morning to burn off to clear skies by early this afternoon. Temps will rise into the low to mid 80’s for much of the area with slightly cooler temps in the far north and along the coast. Along with the warm temps, humidity will increase slightly as dew points rise into the 60’s. Along with the heat and humidity comes the chance for thunderstorms and a few will be popping up this afternoon. Not everyone will get one, as is usually the case on days like today, but those who do will enjoy heavy rain, lightning, and potentially a few wind gusts. No widespread severe weather is expected.
Today will feature more cloudy skies and cool temps as our backdoor cold front slowly drifts back east through the region. Look for a few showers and possibly a thunderstorm to develop along the boundary but no severe weather is expected. Clouds are expected to be widespread again today as that boundary drifts back through. Highs are once again expected to be seasonably cool with temps rising into the 70’s across the area. Winds will be light and out of the southeast.
