I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Hazy Hot And Humid Today

Hello everyone!

If you prefer the conditions inside your oven to those outside most of the time, I have good news for you.   Conditions across the southern half of the area will closely resemble the conditions under which grandma’s blueberry pie is baked. Temps today soar into the upper 80’s north and mid 90’s south with dew points in the mid to upper 60’s. This will lead to heat indices approaching 100 so be sure to take extra care to stay cool today. Light synoptic flow will allow for a sea breeze but even along the immediate coast, temps still look to rise well above 80. Skies will also be clear and blue which will only add to the heat. A shower or thunderstorm could develop in the mountains today but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for the better show.

Temps And Hunidity On The Rise Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature noticeable increases in both temperature and humidity as southerly flow develops behind our retreating high. Look for the warmest temps in the west as areas farther east will get any sea breeze cooling effects boosted by the southerly synoptic component today. Highs will range from near 90 in SW NH to between 75 and 80 along the midcoast. Most places will top out in the mid to upper 80’s. Skies should be partly to mostly sunny region wide. An inversion aloft will act to put a lid on storm development today despite plenty of heat and humidity but an afternoon shower or sprinkle cannot be completely ruled out especially over the mountains. Nothing to cancel plans over but just something to be aware of.

Temps rise even more tomorrow and thunderstorms look to bring relief by Thursday or Friday.

Much Warmer And Sunnier Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature morning cloudiness burning off to brilliant sun this afternoon. Temps will rise into the 70’s for most with some low 80’s in the usual warm spots. A light NW breeze is also in store which means even coastal areas get in on the seasonably warm temps as any sea breeze will be kept at bay. The only exception will be the immediate beaches themselves and midcoast areas where the marine influence is stronger. Temps there will remain closer to 70.

Enjoy the seasonable temps while they last, a humid 90 degrees is on the way for late week.

One More Dreary Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature mainly cloudy skies once again with coastal rain drizzle and fog widespread especially this morning. Highs will remain cool in one more day of onshore flow. Look for highs in the 60’s for most with 50’s in the mountains. Drizzle, fog, and showers will be widespread along the coast this morning but coverage should decrease towards this afternoon. Farther inland, look for morning clouds and some showers. In the afternoon, showers will increase in intensity and coverage as an upper level disturbance approaches. Some thunder is even possible on SW NH but no severe weather is expected.

Better weather is expected today.

A Cool And Raw Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cool temps and cloudy skies along with occasional showers and coastal drizzle/fog. Highs will only rise into the 60’s with some 50’s possible in northern areas. Look for a stiff wind off the water today which will keep things feeling extra chilly especially towards the coast. One round of showers is ongoing across the region this morning but a dry period likely emerges this afternoon before remnants of thunderstorms to the west roll in. A rumble or two is possible in NH but otherwise just showers are expected.

More much needed rain is likely tomorrow.

Cool And Cloudy Again Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature more cool and cloudy conditions as maritime high pressure tried to nose into the region. Look for temps today ranging from 65 or so along Penobscot Bay to 80 or so in SW NH. Most folks see highs in the 70’s. While clouds should dominate, especially in the morning hours, some breaks of sun are expected and they sil be most frequent and long lived in western areas. No organized precip is expected today but a stray shower could form over SW NH and the coast is likely to see plenty of drizzle and fog.

Cooler With The Chance For Showers And Storms Today

Hello everyone!

As sad as I am to see my annual Catskill vacation over, it does mean I can get back to doing what I love. Right on que, we have weather today that is something other than 75 and sunny.

A backdoor cold front is situated across the area currently with an extremely warm and unstable airmass in front of it and a cool, stable airmass behind it. Strong storms are forecast to develop along the front this afternoon with lightning and heavy rain being the main threats. This appears most likely in SW NH and most of the area, especially NE of Portland, appears to be mainly dry today. The one small drawback will be the low clouds, drizzle, and fog that we typically get in an onshore flow pattern. Highs will be much cooler today for most with 60’s and low 70’s common. The exception will be SW NH where some 80’s are likely this morning before the front arrives.

While I was away this week I was named ‘Best Meteorologist’ by Downeast Magazine as part of their best of Maine list. While it certainly was super fun and exciting to be recognized in such a way, I want to remind folks I’m not actually a meteorologist which has the following definition according to the AMS (American Meteorological Society).Screenshot_34

I have yet to take a formal class in meteorology or atmospheric science which is why I always point you to the NWS and local media during severe weather when weather information is needed for important decision making. I also want to quickly mention that I wouldn’t be where I am now if the local pro meteorologists weren’t as nice and generous as they are. I’ve learned so much of what I know from talking with them and I could think of a long list of folks more deserving of this award.

Thanks for all your continued support, it means a lot.

Warm And Sunny Again Today

Hello everyone!

After some showers yesterday, we will be returning to our endless streak of sunny skies and temps a few degrees on either side of 80 today. Temps will be cooler along the coast due to a sea breeze and some inland spots could start out under some localized river fog but other than that, nothing too exciting is in the forecast.

I will be heading out-of-state today on a family trip to the mountains and will be unable to post until July 5th. In the meantime, please check local media and the NWS for your forecast info if you don’t already and please don’t use the crap app on your phone, it’s usually wrong 🙂

Warmer Today

Hello everyone!

Today will be warmer and drier than yesterday as that system moves east. Look for high generally in the 70’s with some upper 60’s along the immediate coast and in the far north. Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with the most clouds over far southern areas. Some showers are possible in the mountains but most should stay dry today.

Cooler With Showers And Storms Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cooler temps, cloudier skies, and showers/thunderstorms likely for most. Showers and storms are expected to move in from the west later this morning before exiting during the evening hours. The atmosphere is set up in a way so that it won’t take much for storms to drop some small hail due to very low freezing levels. Highs will range from the mid to upper 60’s north and east to low to mid 70’s south and west where some sun may re-appear this afternoon.
