I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Scattered Showers Today As Sizable Rainmaker Moves In

Hello everyone!

Today will feature mainly cloudy skies with some scattered showers from time to time. While it won’t be a washout, keep the umbrella handy as a tropical airmass moves in creating the potential for heavy rain in any showers that do form. Humidity will be nearly unheard of for late September with dewpoints rising into the low to mid 60’s. Temps will be warm as well with highs ranging through the 70’s with some upper 60’s possible at the coast and up north.

Shown here is the HRRR courtesy of Weatherbell showing one idea as to how scattered showers could play out today.

Tonight and into tomorrow we get a total deluge as tropical air is pushed up and over a front that will be draped across the area. The precise location of the front will dictate exactly who sees the highest totals but a widespread 2-4″ is likely with locally higher amounts to 5 or even 6″ possible under any convective elements that develop and train. Lower amounts of 1-3″ are likely along the international border. You may have heard of tropical storm Joaquin moving north this weekend, I’m watching it carefully but am focusing on tonight and tomorrow’s rain threat now. Keep in mind, the 2-4″ with locally higher amounts is through Thursday and doesn’t at all include this weekend’s rain which I will have more details on later in the week. With this much rain, flooding is definitely a concern and flood watches are up for everyone except far northern areas.

Be sure to stay updated on this event and take appropriate actions for heavy rainfall. I’ll have another update tomorrow morning at the latest and if conditions warrant, tonight. Stay tuned to the NWS and local media for more info.

One More Nice Day Before Much Needed Rain

Hello everyone!

Today will feature increasing clouds and warmer temps with highs ranging from the low 70’s north to the low 80’s in interior SNE. Enjoy this one last day of nice weather because heavy rain looks to arrive tomorrow afternoon/evening and stretch into Wednesday. Coastal areas are in a moderate drought so this isn’t all bad news. More on that threat tomorrow.

Slightly Warmer Today

Hello everyone!

Another nice day is on tap today and after a chilly (even frosty) start this morning, temps look to warm up into the low to mid 70’s which will feel considerably warmer than yesterday’s mid to upper 60’s. Skies will once again be sunny.

Feeling Like Fall Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a chill in the air as Canadian high pressure moves in from the North. Frost advisories are up this morning for the north and mountains so watch for some white on the lawn up there as temps are in the low to mid 30’s. Down south this morning temps are ranging through the 40’s for the most part.

The theme of cool continues through the afternoon today with highs only in the mid to upper 50’s north and low to mid 60’s south though the warm spots of SW ME and NH likely have a shot at 70.

Sunny skies are likely to continue as well for the most part though watch for some mid to high level clouds this morning especially over northern areas.

A Return to Sun Today

Hello everyone!

Today looks to feature clearing skies and a return to the mostly sunny skies that have dominated for the past few days. The return to sun looks to bring back warmer temps with highs once again reaching into the low to mid 70’s with the warmest temps inland and the coast and mountains staying a tad cooler.

Another Nice Fall Day

Hello everyone!

Today will feature another cool and clear day as high pressure remains locked in place. Expect highs ranging from the mid 60’s north to low 70’s south under sunny skies though a few mid level clouds are possible ahead of an upper level trough so it won’t be a cloudless day but it will be dry. Valley fog is likely this morning and could be very dense in spots so watch for low and changing visibilities in the usual foggy spots.

Chilly Start, Beautiful Finish Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a chilly start with current temps ranging through the 30’s and 40’s with the warmest temps at the coast. Patchy valley fog will likely become dense this morning so watch out for reduced visibilities if traveling in that area. Temps will rebound nicely this afternoon with highs a few degrees on either side of 70.
