Today will feature cooler temps, breezy west-northwest winds, and some unsettled weather as morning sunshine destabilizes the air under a chilly pocket aloft. The mountains and Penobscot Bay are currently seeing overcast skies this morning, the former due to upsloping and the latter from the cold front now heading out to our east. The mountain clouds will stick around, but Rockland and surroundings will see some sunshine later this morning.
Clouds will start spilling off the mountains towards the coast midday, bringing with them the chance for some showers. These showers may be composed of any combination of snow, rain, sleet, and graupel. They should be fairly brief though, at least outside the mountains.
Temps will follow our usual upslope/downslope split, with the mountains staying below freezing and the coastline getting into the low/mid 40s.
Today will feature a brief detour back into early October as warm air flows north ahead of an approaching cold front. Look for patchy sunshine this morning especially over southern areas to push temps into the high 50s/low 60s while stubborn clouds keep the interior foothills and mountains in the low 50s. Skies will cloud up a bit more as we approach the evening with the front itself and its associated round of rain sweeping through overnight.
High pressure is sliding overhead this morning which means that in the next few hours, we’ll start to see warm air returning to the area from the southwest. That means that morning sunshine will give way to clouds this afternoon, and the mountains may even have to deal with some snow/sleet/freezing rain showers. Today’s push of warm air will mostly be focused above the surface, so highs will remain on the cooler side between the low 30s up north and the mid 40s near the MA border.
The warmth will make it to the ground tomorrow with highs in the 60s.
Nothing to me says late autumn like cool temps, early sunsets, and a stiff west wind, which pretty much exactly spells out today’s forecast. We’ll have the usual upslope/downslope pattern today with our west wind meaning that the mountains will stay mostly overcast with intermittent flurries while the coast gets a mix of sun and clouds. Temps will range from the upper 20s up north to the upper 30s right along the coast.

As the sun comes up this morning, a band of thick clouds associated with last night’s storm is sliding offshore, leaving a narrow gap of sunshine downwind of the mountains. That sunshine will prove short-lived as even the slightest heating will produce instability and thus clouds as we move into the later morning/midday hours. Clouds and showers will be most widespread in the usual upslope areas, but broader instability and residual moisture will allow more of those showers to spill off the mountains towards the coast this afternoon. Showers will contain a mix of rain, snow, graupel, and possibly some small hail. Temps will be on the cooler side, ranging from the low 30s up in the mountains to the mid 40s along the coast of southern NH.
The active New England weather we expect this time of year will continue later today as our first Alberta Clipper of the season cruises east. Ahead of that system, morning sunshine will gradually become obscured by clouds this afternoon. Temps will be on the cooler side compared to what we’ve seen recently, ranging from the low 30s up north to the mid 40s right along the coast.
This storm’s precipitation will hold off until this evening with snow arriving in the mountains around 9-10 PM and rain developing over the coastal plain around midnight. Temps in the valleys will be too warm for more than a slushy coating-1″ of snow, but the higher terrain will pick up a few inches overnight.
A strong upper-level disturbance is headed our way today, but it has a few miles to go from its current position over West Virginia before it can bring any impacts here. That means we’ll start the day mostly sunny before clouds and showers arrive from the west this afternoon. Showers and storms will be strongest over southwestern NH, where strong winds and hail are possible, before weakening as they head northeast into Maine this evening. High temps will be relatively uniform across the area, ranging from the high 40s up north to the low 50s down south.
Today will feature the arrival of some heavy rain as a seasonably strong autumn storm sweeps through the area. Southeasterly breezes this morning will continue to pick up through the day as the storm approaches, and any gaps in cloud cover this morning will be quick to fill in over the next hour or two.
Rain will arrive from the west in the late morning over NH and early afternoon for ME. It’ll be a pretty straightforward rain event with about 4-6 hours of solid rain in any given spot. Some thunderstorms might be embedded within the line of heavier showers right along the cold front, but overall the more favorable environment for severe weather is farther to our west (there appears to have just been a brief tornado a bit east of where I’m sitting in Ithaca NY). Regardless of any possible thunderstorm activity, strong southeast winds might be able to knock out power to a few of the usual suspects this afternoon along the coast. Overall though, this doesn’t seem like a high-impact event.
Temps will range from the mid 40s up in the mountains to the upper 50s over southern NH.
It will be another quiet day here in northern New England as high pressure passes directly overhead. Look for mostly sunny skies this morning to give way to some clouds moving in from the west this afternoon. High temps will range from the low 40s up in the north woods to the mid 50s near the NH/MA border. A brief sprinkle is possible this evening in western parts of the area, but overall the day will be dry ahead of our next storm which arrives with heavy rain tomorrow.
A cold front is moving through the region this morning, and a weak area of low pressure has begun to develop along that boundary. That means that most spots are seeing a steady light rain as the sun comes up, with temps generally in the 40s. This storm will be fast-moving with sunshine to return area-wide by midday. The sunshine will briefly help lift temps into the 50s for southern parts of the area before colder air moving in from Canada exerts a stronger influence in the afternoon and sends temps falling through the 40s again.
