Hello everyone!

The nicest and most appropriate thing I can say about today’s weather is that it comes straight from the depths of hell. Morning clouds over northeastern parts of the area are burning off and will give way to bright sunshine by midday. This sunshine, combined with southwesterly winds, will push temperatures and dew points well past what any sensible person would deem reasonable. Highs look to range from around 90 up in the mountains to 95 in the foothills and usual warm spots just inland. Dew points will surge into the mid-upper 70s, nearly unprecedented for Northern New England. That will put heat index values firmly in the upper 90s to low 100s.

For those wishing to escape such horrific air, points south of Route 1 and east of Brunswick will be your friend as winds take on more of a southerly/ onshore component. Highs here will top out in the 80s. Hop on a boat and head into Penobscot Bay to find nice temps in the 70s (and some fog).

All this heat and humidity will provide plenty of fuel for thunderstorm activity this afternoon, but there isn’t much of a match to unleash such energy. Our best bet is probably for storms forming over New York and Vermont to wander our way later in the afternoon/evening. These storms may be quite potent from a damaging wind perspective, especially in western NH.

Another miserably humid night will follow tonight before more heat tomorrow. Relief will come in the form of a cold front on Saturday.

To be quite frank, we have a rotten stretch of weather ahead here in New England. The Bermuda High, which has been mercifully docile for most of the summer, will flex its wretched muscles beginning today sending a hot and humid airmass our way.

There are plenty of clouds scattered around the region this morning especially farther north and east in Maine. This means that most areas east of the border will enjoy one more day of bearable temperatures, with the probable exception of York and western Cumberland counties. Highs in the rest of Maine look to top out in the mid to upper 70s with cooler values along the Midcoast where low clouds will be augmented by some fog and winds will remain onshore. Farther west in southern NH, temps will spike into the mid to upper 80s with dew points in the low to mid 70s. This will feel, in one word, miserable.

As far as precipitation goes, some showers are sliding into western NH this morning. I expect these to remain weak, but new showers and storms will pop up again this afternoon over the mountains. Some of these could make it as far south as the foothills of central NH and western ME, but most spots south of say Concord-Portland should remain dry. I don’t see much in the way of a severe weather threat from these storms but gusty winds are possible in addition to heavy rain and lightning. Showers will generally fade around/after sunset, though temps won’t fall much overnight.

Tomorrow’s weather looks absolutely brutal with more heat and humidity sticking around into Friday. Saturday looks to be the day of glorious relief as a cold front moves in from the west. Hang in there.

Today will feature generally quiet weather as we sit between a decaying low pressure system over the Gulf of Maine and a larger storm way to our northwest in Canada. That old low in the Gulf of Maine will provide low clouds and possibly some fog for the coast during the first half of the day. Clearing will happen gradually from west to east during the midday/early afternoon hours before fog and stratus surge inland again around sunset. These clouds will hold temps to around 70 along the coast with some low/mid 60s in the usual Midcoast peninsula cool spots. Farther west, today will feature a mix of sun and clouds more conducive for heating. High temps will climb into the low 80s for the CT Valley with upper 70s likely for most of the foothills and mountains. It will once again be a fairly humid day with dew points in the mid 60s. Given the warm and humid air I can’t totally rule out an afternoon shower in the CT Valley nor a midday sprinkle along the Midcoast but overall it will be a dry day as far as precipitation is concerned.

Today will feature mild temps and humid conditions as low pressure near Long Island pushes maritime air in our direction. The Gulf of Maine isn’t cold enough to provide much help this time of year in terms of keeping temps and humidity down, so while it won’t be hot and humid, it will be warm and humid. Along the coast, low clouds and fog will linger through much of the day which will hold temps down a bit. Highs should fall a few degrees on either side of 70 with potentially some lower 60s closer to the cooler waters of Penobscot Bay. Farther inland, highs will make a run towards 80 under patchy mid/high clouds. A few showers could pop up once again this afternoon/evening especially over in NH, but I don’t expect activity to be as widespread as yesterday.

Today will feature cooler temps and unsettled weather as another wave of low pressure develops along a frontal boundary sitting offshore. As with yesterday, the best chance for rain will be along the coast closer to the system while the mountains and foothills should stay mostly dry. The rainiest period along the coast will be midday through the afternoon with some drying possible near sunset (especially SW of Portland). Thick clouds and northeasterly breezes will hold temps to within a few degrees of 70 for most with the warmest temps, in the mid 70s, found up in the mountains where breaks of sun are possible this afternoon.

In another glorious sign of our forthcoming shift towards autumn, today’s weather will be brought to you by a non-tropical storm developing offshore. This storm, currently located near the Outer Banks of NC, will move towards Cape Cod during the day today. The system has already pushed thick clouds overhead, especially outside the mountains. This will generally remain the rule for the rest of today with only a few brief breaks of sun possible in the far north. Shower activity will be focused to our southeast for most of today, so the coast stands the best shot at some raindrops especially after sunset. A few isolated showers can’t be ruled out in the mountains either especially north of Farmington.

Cloud cover and southeasterly breezes will hold temps in the mid to upper 70s for most with a few low 80s possible northeast of Augusta.

Today will feature mostly cloudy skies but mostly dry weather as a storm develops just a little too far offshore to bring precipitation to our area. As with any storm taking a track like this, clouds will be thickest along the coast with breaks of sun expected up in the mountains and in western NH especially this afternoon. High temps will stay a bit on the cooler side thank to the clouds, ranging from the low 70s along the immediate coast to the upper 70s in southern NH.

Low pressure moving to our north will keep today from being perfectly clear, though most of the day will be nice for most of the area. A mix of sun and clouds this morning with scattered showers northeast of Augusta will give way to some more clouds this afternoon as instability develops under an upper-level low. Near the coast, some of these clouds will grow tall enough for rain and isolated thunder during the afternoon. The clouds and cooler air aloft will hold temps to the mid 70s north and upper 70s south.

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the return of showers and thunderstorms as an area of low pressure moves in from the west. Any sunshine this morning will be short-lived along the coast with overcast settling in for the afternoon. Southerly winds will pick up this afternoon and push moisture-laden air into the area, leading to some patchy fog along the Midcoast and an increase in humidity everywhere. The first showers should arrive in western NH between 3 and 5 PM before spreading east into Maine. Rain will fall heavily at times through the night before tapering off closer to tomorrow morning. Most of the area can expect around 0.5-1.5″ of rain with a few towns that end up under some heavy thunderstorms exceeding that and a few towns drawing the short straw between cells with less.

This system happens to be what I call the “summer backbreaker” as it will signal the end of deep/mid summer and the beginning of our slide into late summer/early fall. There will still be warm/hot days heading into August, as well as humidity unfortunately, but this is our first real cool airmass arriving on NW flow rather than E/NE flow so it signals a shift in the state of the atmosphere worth noting. If you couldn’t tell by now, this is one of my favorite days each year. Enjoy it!

Hello everyone!

Today will feature pretty nice weather across the area as high pressure builds overhead. Look for mostly sunny skies this morning with just a dash of cloud cover moving in this evening. There will be just enough humidity over far southern areas to support some pop-up clouds earlier in the afternoon, a couple of which just might grow tall enough to produce some brief and isolated showers. Overall though, today looks pretty dry. The northerly/northwesterly breezes will push air into the region from Quebec (not on fire) instead of NW Ontario (very much on fire) so smoke won’t be nearly as much of a concern today as it was over the past couple days. Enjoy that beautiful clean air!
