After a chilly and, for some, foggy start to the day we’ll see clear skies and quickly-rebounding temps later on. Highs will range from just shy of 50 in the north to around 60 in the south. Hello everyone!

Today’s going to be a great weather day across the area despite the (general) lack of sunshine. In the last 90 days, Portland has gotten all of 5″ of rain which is less than half of what we usually pick up in the same time. Most of the rest of the region is running year-to-date precipitation deficits between 6 and 12″, even after our two recent heavy rain events. So we need all the rain we can get, and today’s weather pattern is perfectly positioned to deliver.

Today, we’ll see a cold front slide slowly into the region as deep tropical moisture surges north. When the moisture hits the cold front later this morning, it will be forced to rise, during which time it will cool and condense into clouds and rain. So look for showers to develop in the mountains and foothills starting in the next couple hours before becoming more widespread this afternoon. As upper-level winds become oriented parallel to the front this afternoon, it will stall out and the rain will keep falling along and west of the boundary.

Though there’s still some uncertainty, the front looks most likely to stall out along the Turnpike which means the foothills and mountains will be best-positioned to cash in on continued rain this afternoon. The immediate coast and especially the Midcoast looks to stay mostly dry until the next round of rain arrives late tonight/early tomorrow morning.

East of the front along the coast, some breaks of sun are possible especially this morning. Thus the warmest temps will be found along the NH Seacoast where highs will top out around 65-70. Much cooler temps, in the low-mid 50s, will be found up north where clouds will remain locked in place all day.

Through the end of the day today, it looks like rainfall totals will range from zero along the Midcoast (and perhaps parts of the coast farther south/west too) to 1 or 1.5″ in the foothills and mountains depending on how long bands of showers linger over any particular area.

Another round of rain arrives tomorrow morning and will be both significantly heavier and more widespread. To top if off, tomorrow’s round of rain will change over to snow up in the mountains as cold air filters south behind the developing storm. Not the best stretch for outdoor plans but man do we need the rain!

Today will feature warmer temps and a mix of sun and clouds as our next storm system begins approaching our area from the west. Ahead of this cold front, we’ll see southerly winds develop today which will push warmer air into the region. This is especially true for New Hampshire where southerly winds aren’t coming right in off the Gulf of Maine. High temps will range from 55 in the mountains to 70 around and west of Portsmouth NH. A few clouds are noted on visible satellite imagery this morning but they should move out of the region in the next few hours and most of us should end up seeing plenty of sunshine today. The cloudiest parts of the area will be the mountains which are located closer to the front over Quebec and New York.

Generally nice weather will return today as yesterday’s rain heads off into the Canadian Maritimes. Behind that system, winds will flip around to the northwest but they won’t be particularly strong (10-20 mph). That said, even a little bit of NW flow triggers our upslope/downslope pattern. This pattern will be in place especially this morning with cooler temps and cloudier skies in the mountains while the coastline enjoys warmer air and sunnier skies. As the day goes on, clouds and any sprinkles they might produce over the mountains will gradually fade as northwesterly flow weakens.

High temps today will range from 45 in the north to 65 along the coastal plain.

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a round of much-needed rain as the remnants of Hurricane Delta move up the coast. The seriously hazardous aspects of the storm have long since faded but a pocket of beneficial moisture remains, and we’re lucky enough to have that moisture head our way today.

Rain has begun already across southwestern NH and will slowly move northeast through the rest of the day. By noon, the first drops will be falling in northern NH and parts of southwestern ME. By 3 PM, most of the region will be seeing rain. Rain will fall steadily this afternoon and may be heavy at times especially along the coast. The region is still experiencing severe to extreme drought so no flooding issues are expected and we’ll be glad to take every raindrop we can. Rain will taper off from west to east this evening. If we’re lucky, parts of the region could end up with over 2″ of rain when all is said and done. Most spots will get between 1 and 2″.

High temps today will range from 45 up in the mountains to 55 in the south.

Hello everyone!

Today will feature continued cool and quiet weather as strong high pressure remains anchored overhead. A weak disturbance aloft has brought some mid/high clouds to much of the region this morning but these will be moving quickly off to the east by midday. In their wake, skies should become mostly sunny especially as you head farther north. East-northeasterly breezes will keep us supplied with cool air from New Brunswick which means highs will range from around 45 up north to around 55 in the south. No precipitation is expected today.

After unseasonably mild weather yesterday, cooler air is moving back into the region this morning thanks to northerly breezes. These breezes will be strongest in the morning before tapering off this afternoon. Skies will be mostly sunny outside of upslope cloudiness in the mountains and some high-level clouds moving in from the southwest this afternoon. High temps today will range from the mid/upper 40s up north to around 60 in southern NH.

Hello everyone!

Today will feel a lot more like June than October both in terms of temperatures and severe thunderstorms. A strong cold front is swinging in from the northwest this evening, and out ahead of it we have breezy southwest winds this morning. Those southwest winds, combined with developing sunshine, will boost temps well above normal today. Look for highs in the upper 60s up north and upper 70s to low 80s in the south.

After morning clouds clear out in the next hour or so, we’ll see mostly sunny skies until the front arrives later today. Clouds and showers will arrive first in the mountains during the mid-afternoon hours (3-4 PM) before spreading towards the coastline later in the evening. Some of these storms, particularly those in the mountains and western parts of NH, may be severe. Strong winds are the biggest threat from these storms though hail and a tornado can’t be ruled out.

Storms will dissipate as they arrive at the shoreline around 10-11 PM.

Skies will be clear (outside a few lingering upslope clouds), temps will be seasonably cool, and winds will be a bit lighter from the WSW. Highs will range from the mid 40s up north to around 60 in southern NH. Not that much else to say except get outside and enjoy it!

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cool temps and breezy WNW winds as cool air streams into the region behind the cold front that moved through last night. As with any WNW flow situation, our weather will be influenced strongly by upsloping/downsloping today. The mountains will be quite cool, in the low to mid 40s, and will see more clouds than sun. A few brief showers are possible too. Down along the coastal plain, downsloping will support mostly sunny skies along with temps in the mid to perhaps upper 50s.

Winds will be gusting 30-40 mph today so don’t be too surprised if a couple branches come down and power is out for a few minutes. This is especially true closer to the coast where winds will be stronger.
