Hazy But Otherwise Quiet Today

Hello everyone!

Hazy conditions will continue across the region today due to a thick layer of smoke from wildfires on the West Coast that has blown east over the past few days. Thankfully, the smoke is about 15,000 to 20,000 feet above our heads, so there won’t be any air quality issues in our area. That said, it’s still pretty eerie to have not a cloud in the sky but still be unable to see your shadow at high noon…

The smoke is thick enough to dim the sun a bit so high temps will be cooler than otherwise expected today, ranging from the upper 60s up north and along the Midcoast to the low/mid 70s in interior SW parts of the area.

The smoke plume shows up clearly on satellite imagery this morning along with Hurricane Sally in the bottom left near the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Paulette on the right southeast of Newfoundland.

Thankfully, at least for the next five days, our area won’t see any impacts from any of the seven (!!) tropical systems in the Atlantic. We will have to keep an eye on Hurricane Teddy though as it looks to wander towards the northwestern Atlantic early next week. At the moment, it’s not something to be concerned about but I can’t guarantee that won’t change.

Cool Early Fall Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Yesterday’s northerly breezes ahead of an approaching area of Canadian high pressure pushed cooler and drier air into the region. Today, that high will be directly overhead. That means clear skies, cool temps, and generally light winds.Highs will range from the upper 50s up north to near 70 in southern NH.

There’s not much else to say about what the atmosphere is up to in our area today, but there is some news from the ocean.

Hurricane Paulette is racing out to sea about five hundred miles to our southeast this morning. That means that powerful long-period swells will arrive in our waters today. These swells will present serious hazards to mariners especially near shore, as well as an extreme rip current danger for those at/near area beaches. They’ll also be pretty awesome to watch break on the rocks if you find the fight spot to observe them safely.

Another Shot of Cool Air Arrives Today

Hello everyone!

Another cold front is crossing the region this morning which means we’ll get another shot of cool air starting this afternoon. As the front passes by, you won’t notice any showers but you will notice northwesterly breezes pick up this morning. Those breezes will help keep the mountains somewhat socked in the clouds while the coastal plain basks in the lovely mid-September sun. High temps will vary accordingly with mid/upper 50s up north and mid/upper 70s in the south. No precipitation is expected today.

Cool and Pleasant Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cool temps and pleasant weather as Canadian high pressure arrives from the north. Northerly breezes yesterday brought this delightful new airmass into the region, and I suspect you might find the air outside a bit chilly if you happen to step out the door first thing this morning. Isn’t that a nice feeling. Aside from a few high clouds spilling into the region from a storm out in Minnesota, skies will be clear across the region today. High temps will range from around 60 in the north to around 70 in the south.

Get outside and enjoy the lovely weather if you get the chance!

Cooler and Drier Air Returns Today

Hello everyone!

A cold front snuck through the region last night which means we’re now on the pleasant side of the boundary where cooler temps and much lower dew points can be found. Northerly breezes will be responsible for pushing that cool air into the region today, and they may be a bit gusty especially this morning. That said, I’m not expecting gusts to reach the threshold for concern about power outages.

While the surface cold front has pushed through the region, the mid-level cold front is still moving through Quebec. That means we’ll have to deal with some mid-level cloud cover for a couple hours this morning before sunshine arrives. By this evening though, everyone should be enjoying clear skies. Outside of an isolated shower in the mountains associated with upsloping and that mid-level cold front, today will feature continued dry weather.

High temps will range from the upper 50s up north to near 70 in southern NH.

Muggy Weather Continues Today

Hello everyone!

We’re stuck on the sad side of a frontal boundary for one more day today which means we’ll have to continue dealing with abundant low clouds, fog, and muggy conditions. The fog will be thickest over eastern Maine where it will linger the longest. Fog is much thinner over NH and far western Maine where clear skies will return earlier in the day. As the fog lifts, breaks of sun will develop for just about everyone (except the Midcoast which will still be stuck with stratus). That sunshine will team up with the warm airmass still streaming into the region from the south to produce very warm temps for this time of year. High temps will range from the mid/upper 70s along the coast and way up north to the upper 80s in central/western parts of the area.

With warm moist air and an approaching cold front, we will have to entertain the possibility of some showers and storms this afternoon. The odds will be highest in NH and western Maine where sunshine emerges earlier in the day. Storms will be scattered fairly widely, so unfortunately many/most folks will stay dry (we need the rain!). But for those who do manage to sneak under a thunderstorm, a solid soaking will be in order as storms move slowly and have access to abundant moisture. Heavy rain and lightning will be the biggest threats with storms that develop this afternoon, though some gusty winds can’t be ruled out.

Showers and storms will fade quickly after sunset.

Muggy Today

Hello everyone!

Unfortunately we remain trapped on the wrong side of a frontal boundary separating warm/moist air from cool/dry air. That boundary is hung up near the Canadian border this morning and will remain there through the rest of the day. South of that boundary, dense fog has formed across much of coastal Maine this morning as abundant moisture surges north. For most folks, that fog will slowly burn off this morning as the sun comes up. If you’re along the midcoast, you’ll be dealing with low clouds and/or fog for most if not all of the day. The best shot at some sunny breaks will be up in the mountains this morning and farther south in the foothills later today. NH should also see plenty of sunshine as they’re further removed from the Gulf of Maine. A few afternoon showers can’t be ruled out up in the mountains where daytime heating will support a bit more instability, but overall dry weather is expected to continue today. Highs will range from the mid 70s along the coastline and up north to the upper 80s over central NH and interior SW ME.

Summer Weather Returns Today

Hello everyone!

After a lovely several days of cool temps and dry conditions, warm and somewhat humid air will return to the region today as southerly breezes continue ahead of a cold front off to our west. The increase in moisture means that we’ll see some patchy fog and stratus this morning, though it should burn off relatively quickly. Partly to mostly sunny skies will develop following the dissipation of that stratus/fog, allowing temps to climb above what we’d normally expect this time of year. Expect highs ranging from the mid 70s way up north and right along the coastline to the mid/upper 80s in southern NH and interior SW Maine.

Warm Air Begins Returning Today

Hello everyone!

A strong cold front is moving through the Great Lakes region this morning which means we’ll on the warm side of the system today. With that in mind, expect breezy southerly winds, warm temps, and an increase in humidity. Highs will range from the low/mid 70s up north and along the immediate coast to the low/mid 80s in southern NH and interior SW ME. While some clouds will drift into the region ahead of that front today, no precipitation is expected outside of a stray shower in the mountains. A quick check of radar imagery shows a couple showers in the foothills this morning as well. Generally speaking, the sunniest spots will be closest to the coastline today.

Lovely Late-Summer Weather Continues Today

Hello everyone!

We get to enjoy another day of lovely late-summer weather today as Canadian high pressure drifts overhead. A few mid-level clouds made for a spectacular sunrise around 6 AM, which I hope at least a few of you got the chance to enjoy. Those clouds will be on their way out over the next couple hours as a weak upper-level disturbance slides east. Once we move into the late morning hours, sunshine will be the rule area-wide. Temps today will remain a few degrees below normal, ranging from the mid 60s up north to the upper 70s along the coast.
