Wet And Windy Conditions Move In This Afternoon

Hello everyone!

Today will feature rain moving in as a late season coastal storm intensifies to our south. There is currently a band of moderate to heavy rain over MA and NH that will drift into western ME this morning but that should clear out for a few dry hours later this morning and into the early afternoon before the main event rolls in late afternoon. Rain will be heavy and steady this afternoon into this evening and winds will pick up along the coast gusting to 40mph at times. Up in the mountains, the higher elevations look to pick up a little more snow as the air cools aloft.

Flood watches are posted for the entire area as 1-3″ of rain combines with leftover snow melt to fill the already pretty full rivers so watch for some minor flooding around the area today through Wednesday. Coastal flood warnings and advisories are up for those areas that typically see minor coastal flooding problems during events like these.

A quick peek at the rest of the week reveals lots of showers mainly focused in the afternoon/evening hours as this same storm lingers around the area.

One Last Quiet Day Before Another Dreary Stretch

Hello everyone!

Another nice day is on tap today as high pressure builds in from the NW. Expect mainly clear skies with temps rising into the 60’s in the favored warm spots (interior SW ME, southern NH, interior SNE) with 50’s elsewhere. The ME and NH coasts may have a chance to get to 60 with an offshore flow before the high moves offshore and onshore winds take over in the late afternoon.

Enjoy the nice weather today because another dreary stretch is on the way starting with a heavy windswept rain tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday along with more rain chances through the rest of the upcoming week.

Dry Morning, Not So Dry Afternoon

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a lovely start with most areas reporting mainly clear skies this morning. Clouds will quickly increase however as a storm moves in from the NW. As of now, it looks like this event will resemble summer thunderstorms more than a spring-time clipper. Areas farther north will see more activity and south of the MA border, just another mainly sunny spring day is on tap. Some snow/sleet could mix in across the far north and the higher terrain so watch for that in the favored spots. Thunder will also be a concern today especially north of a Brunswick/Fryeburg line and in some of the stronger cells, some small hail is possible. Most shower/thunderstorm activity should start around 1 along the international border and move SE from there.

A coastal storm is looking more likely early next week with rain and wind being the most likely impacts.

Some April Showers This Morning, Drier This Afternoon

Hello everyone!

We have a very weak storm moving through this morning which is bringing a few showers here and there. It looks like everyone will see at least a few drops but anything more than that will be widely scattered. All precip looks to move out mid/late morning followed by partial clearing this afternoon. Temps will rise into the upper 50’s north and mid 60’s south.

More showers tomorrow with a side of thunder for some especially north and then some heavier and possibly steadier rain or even snow looks to make an appearance next week. Remember, we’re still in April 🙂

Change In Winds Brings Ever So Slightly Different Temps Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature yesterday’s NW winds changing to today’s S/SW winds. This means that a warmer airmass will be moving in for most of us. Therefore, instead of 50’s, the mountains and foothills will be seeing 60’s today. However, an onshore flow brings colder weather to the coast so instead of yesterday’s 70’s, we’ll enjoy some nice 40’s and 50’s today, coolest along the midcoast. Skies will once again be sunny as high pressure remains in control. Dry air will also continue to be in place today and while the wind criteria for a red flag warning looks like it won’t be met, use caution if burning some of that spring brush today as the risk is higher than normal that things could get out of hand.

Looking ahead, wetter weather is on the horizon with the threats mainly Saturday midday (only north) and early next week (everywhere).

Warm And Breezy Today

Hello everyone!

Another pretty nice day by April standards is on the way with sunny skies and warm temps. Winds though will be a bit of an issue with gusts approaching or exceeding 25mph. The air will also be extremely dry  and the combination of those two factors has led the NWS in Gray to issue a red flag warning for the foothills. Basically what this means is that the fire danger is elevated today so hold off on burning that brush pile for at least a little bit until we get a tad more precip. Temps today will range from the low 50’s north to the mid 60’s south.

No big storms are in sight though some rain or snow is likely with the passage of a weak storm Saturday. The best chance for impacts from this one will be in the north.

Another Warm Day But A Wet Start

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the passage of a cold front which means that we’re going to have to deal with some showers this morning. Most showers will be light and not a big deal but wet roads will be common for the AM commute. Rain moves out mid/late morning followed quickly by clearing and NW winds. This time of year however NW winds are good because they prevent a sea breeze and as a result, coastal areas are likely to hit 70 today. Elsewhere, temps look to range through the 60’s coolest in the mountains.

More warm temps are in the forecast through the rest of the week though we may have to wait a little while for more 70’s.

Another Lovely Spring Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature another day similar to yesterday with mainly warm temps, light winds, and clear skies. Winds will be turning southerly today which should allow for coastal areas, especially east of Portland to drop several degrees today and thus highs will be 5-10 degrees colder than yesterday in those areas. The typical warm spots (think interior SW ME, interior NH, interior SNE) should see temps very similar or even a tad warmer than yesterday with highs reaching the low 70’s in those areas. The mountains will, as always, be a tad cooler with highs in the 60’s. Mostly clear skies are expected though I would be worried about some isolated stratus creeping into coastal areas east of Portland though so don’t be caught off guard if that pans out though it seems unlikely at this point.

Springy Stretch Continues

Hello everyone!

Our springy pattern shows no signs of changing as high pressure builds in today. Some gusty conditions are possible this morning but any winds will quickly subside today but the light westerly wind will be our friend helping to keep the sea breeze at bay. We will enjoy full sun today across the entire area with just a few clouds here and there especially in the mountains. A sea breeze looks to take shape over the usual areas where highs will be a bit lower compared to the rest of the area. Most areas will see low to mid 60’s with the exceptions being the higher terrain of ME and NH as well as the immediate coast.

More warm weather is on the way tomorrow and most of the next week as well.

Warmer Today As Spring Arrives In A More Practical Sense

Hello everyone!

Today will feature sunny skies, warmer temps (for most), and some gusty winds too. A cold front passed through last night and cold air advection is beginning to ramp up way above our heads but temps will actually climb today for the coast and foothills as the mixing behind the cold front allows for sunshine and with the high sun angle of April, temps will shoot right up today into the 50’s for most, 40’s in the mountains.  Some clouds will also show up in the mountains as some weak upsloping sets up though no precip is expected there. We should get a nice cumulus field for the first time this spring downwind of the mountains so watch for some nice puffy clouds later in the day. Winds will also be gusty behind the front with gusts over 30mph at times especially in the mountains.

Tomorrow we see sunny and 60’s (except maybe at the coast where a sea breeze is likely). The pattern has changed, everyone. Welcome to spring.
