Hello everyone!

The good news of the day is that the winter solstice is here, marking the astronomical beginning of the greatest season. Unfortunately, that’s about where it ends, because Mother Nature is taking a short pause from her duty to bring cold and snow this time of year. Today’s weather will be just the opposite of what should be happening as low pressure moves to our west and warm air floods north.

Look for light freezing rain inland this morning to give way to bands of heavy rain across the area this afternoon/evening. Tragically, even the mountains will see a total washout with 2-3″ of liquid falling. The rain will be accompanied by warm temps as well, ranging from 40 in the north to 60 in far southern NH. Of course this warm air has to work to get here, and gusty SE winds will be doing that work. Gusts along the coast could top 40 mph this evening as a line of showers and thunderstorms rolls through. That won’t be enough to cause widespread major damage, but it will bring the threat for at least scattered power outages.

Rain clears from west to east tonight, with more sensible weather returning for the weekend.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and our stretch of weather that belongs in the month of December appears to be doing just that. Temps will rise substantially today ahead of our next storm system which tragically will be moving to our west tomorrow. Look for highs to spike above freezing region wide, with mid 40’s possible along the coast and in Southern NH. Mostly sunny skies will rule for most of the day with high clouds moving in this afternoon/evening.

Heavy wind-driven rain will wash away White Christmas hopes tomorrow along with the chance for thunder in the south.

Today will feature quiet weather fairly typical for this time of year. Lingering upslope clouds leftover from yesterday’s NW winds will dissipate this afternoon as those winds start to relax with high pressure overhead. That will leave us with a mix of sun and clouds region-wide as some mid/upper level clouds spill over the ridge aloft. Look for temps ranging from 20 in the north to 35 in the south with no precip expected.

Hello everyone!

Today will feature clearing skies downwind of the mountains as colder air pours in on NW winds. Look for chilly temps ranging from 10 in the north to 25 in the south. Winds will be strongest of course in the mountains, but everyone should see some gusts above 30 mph. That won’t be enough to cause too much in the way of power interruptions, but it will be enough to make the cool temps feel even chillier. As for clouds and precip, NW winds will set up our classic upslope/downslope pattern with overcast skies and flurries in the mountains. As for coastal areas, some morning clouds and flurries are possible as some moisture lingers from yesterday’s departing storm system, but that will quickly clear out to sunny skies this afternoon.

Today will feature light snow for the first part of the day, especially in parts of Maine closer to a weak low pressure system offshore. Snow will taper of from west to east over the course of the day today, with the midcoast hanging onto the flakes the longest. As the sun comes up, look for temps to warm a bit, with a change from snow to rain expected east of route 1. Highs will range from 25 in the north to 40 along the NH seacoast. Everyone will see drier weather tonight outside of upslope regions as cold air begins to pour in from Canada.

Hello everyone!

Today will feature increasing clouds and mild temps in advance of our next storm system which is set to arrive late this evening. Expect morning sunshine to fade after lunch as that storm gets closer. Temps will be on the milder side as we wait for the storm to develop its own internal cold air source, with highs ranging from 25 in the north to 40 in the south.

The storm arrives with a mix of rain and snow this afternoon in southern NH, before moving into Maine with snow tonight. Expect 3-6″ of snow along the coastal plain, with slightly less along the immediate shoreline where some sleet and ice may mix in. Lighter 2-4″ amounts are likely in the mountains where moisture will be less readily available. Snow clears out with strong NW winds developing later in the day tomorrow.

Today will feature milder temps and initially cloudier skies as a cold front slides through the area. As the front moves offshore, downsloping NW winds will bring sunny breaks to the coastal plains while cloudy skies continue in the higher terrain. Temps will be warmer as well, due to the warmer airmass associated with the front. Look for highs ranging from 35 in the north to 45 in the south. No precip is expected as dry air filters in from Canada.

A cold front is beginning to approach from the west today, and as a result we’ll be looking for warmer temps and cloudier skies across the area. Any sunny spots this morning will gradually become obscured by this afternoon with light snow arriving in the northern mountains this evening. Accumulations will remain confined to the higher terrain, with less than 2″ expected even there. Temps will range from 30 in the north to 45 in the south.

Today will feature cool temps and mostly clear skies as Canadian high pressure anchors overhead, and a weak system moves by to our south. Bitter cold temps this morning will rebound into the mid 10’s north and low 30’s south. Most of the region will see clear skies with the exception of SW areas which will see some clouds from the aforementioned weak system moving by to our south.

Hello everyone!

The connection between Canadian and Carolinian storm systems developed as projected last night, and remains delicately in place this morning. Light snow is being reported mainly north and east of Portland, as well as in the mountains. Snow outside of the mountains will be quickly drying up later this morning as the Canadian disturbance races off to the east. Sunshine will then develop downwind of the mountains this afternoon, with upsloping continuing in the higher terrain. High temps will range from 15 in the north to 30 in the south.
