I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Flooding Rains In The South This Morning

Hello everyone!

After bringing catastrophic flooding to parts of North and South Carolina this past weekend, Florence is paying a visit to New England on its way out of the country this morning. As of this writing at 8:15 AM, southern NH including Manchester and Keene is under a flash flood warning, meaning that rapid rises in streams/creeks is occurring/imminent. Heavy rain extends slightly north of this region as well, with lighter rain farther north towards Lewiston.

That heavy rain in Southern NH will lift a little to the north today, likely making it up into the Casco Bay region by lunchtime. As in Southern NH, rapid small stream rises and ponding on roads will be the primary threats. Thankfully Florence is accelerating off to the East, and will not be stalling out like it did in the Carolinas. For those who do see heavy rain this morning, imagine what it would be like for it to rain like that for days on end. That was Florence. Now imagine what it would be like for that to go on for an entire week. That was Harvey. We get some wild weather here in Maine for sure, but we’re quite fortunate to usually escape those types of events.

Up to the north, a cold front is dropping south through the Saint Lawrence Valley. This will be putting up a wall of sorts that prohibits Florence’s moisture from moving into northern areas. A few scattered showers and storms are possible along the front this afternoon in the north, but otherwise its passage will be quiet.

Both systems clear out this evening, with partly sunny skies returning in the west by sunset. Highs will take on a distribution opposite to what we’d usually expect. The warmest temps near 80 will be up in the west and mountains where peeks of sun will develop this afternoon, while the coast/foothills stay the cloudiest and thus the coolest around 70.

More Late-Summer Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature more weather that resembles late summer more than it does early fall. Look for highs to rise into the low 80’s for most areas, slightly cooler in the mountains and along the coast, under partly to mostly sunny skies. Scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible in northern and northeastern parts of the area, from NH’s mountains across to the foothills north and northeast of Augusta. Slightly more humid conditions are expected today as well, adding to the summer feel.

A Lovely Late Summer Day

Hello everyone!

Today will feature lovely late summer weather as high pressure remains anchored off to our north. Look for highs right around 80 for most of the area, with mid to upper 70’s in the mountains and along the immediate coastline. Morning foggy areas will see sunshine develop within the next hour or two, with more sun than clouds expected through the rest of the day. A brief shower is possible in the far north this afternoon as a weak boundary drifts southward, but otherwise dry conditions will continue.

Fog Slow To Lift This Morning Along The Coast

Hello everyone!

Fog and low cloudiness will be slow to lift off the coast this morning as light winds and abundant moisture appear not to be going anywhere in a hurry. By lunchtime, heating from the sun should get most places out of the clouds, but the sun’s heating is quite a bit less powerful this time of year compared to the summer, so that process will take longer than it might have a couple months ago. Look for highs to range from 80 in the north, where the sun will be out all day, to 65 right along the coast where fog will hang on the longest.

Morning Fog Burns Off To A Pleasant Afternoon

Hello everyone!

Fog is being reported in parts of the area this morning, primarily in the south. That fog will be burning off this morning for all but southernmost NH, with sunny skies and pleasant conditions developing. Highs will primarily fall in the mid to upper 70’s, but those southern NH areas that hang onto the fog will be a bit closer to the 70 degree mark. The same will be true for the midcoast where some low cloudiness is expected to stick around into the afternoon. No precip is expected today as high pressure remains in control.

Clearing And Drying Today

Hello everyone!

A weak disturbance aloft brought some showers to southern parts of the area this morning. The last of those showers have now moved off the coast, and as high pressure builds in from the northeast, expect clearing and drying weather across the area. Locations closest to the high pressure center will see the nicest weather, with sunny skies and temps in the upper 70’s for most central and northeastern areas. More cloud cover will be present in Southern NH/SW ME, where cooler temps in the low-mid 70’s are expected.

Stagnant Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today’s weather across western Maine and New Hampshire can best be described as “stagnant”. We have a cool but humid and moisture-laden airmass in place, and there’s some general upward motion, but nothing very organized. As a result, we’ll look for some scattered showers, especially across southern areas, but no widespread or heavy rain. Clouds will be fairly widespread, also concentrated in the southern half of the area. Highs will be on the cooler side, especially in southern areas where we’ll have those clouds and showers, generally within a few degrees of 70. Warmer temps in the low-mid 70’s will be found farther north where breaks of sun are expected.

Quick side note: Florence is still headed for the Carolinas. While no impacts are expected here, you may have friends/family who are interested in the forecast. My thoughts on the storm can be found on the weather.us blog: https://blog.weather.us/major-hurricane-florence-set-to-arrive-in-north-carolina-tomorrow-longer-term-track-remains-uncertain/

A Fairly Dreary Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature less than stellar weather by most people’s definitions, though I’d take this over heat any day of the week. Rain is being observed on radar imagery this morning, and showers will continue through around lunchtime. This afternoon, look for showers to become much more widely scattered. In terms of sky cover, clouds will be the name of the game for most of the area today, though some peeks of sun are possible especially in Southern NH.

Highs will largely be determined by the timing of a warm front moving north today. Southern NH will see that front the soonest, so they’ll have the warmest temps around 75. NE parts of ME may not see that front at all, or if they do it won’t be until much later, so highs there will be in the low-mid 60’s.

Rain Arrives Today As Low Pressure Approaches

Hello everyone!

After a nice few days of fall weather, we’ll be dealing with some not so awesome conditions today as low pressure approaches from the southwest. Clouds have already overspread the area, and rain will follow suite this afternoon. In terms of timing for rain, SW NH will be first up, with precipitation beginning in the early afternoon hours. It will take longer for the rain to reach Maine, but all except far NE areas should see precip by sunset, with those last holdouts filling in shortly after dark.

Temperature wise, it’ll be a seasonably cool day as we sit on the cool side of the warm front, with developing ESE winds and overcast skies. Look for highs generally in the mid 60’s, with cooler temps in the mountains.

More Beautiful Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Canadian high pressure is in charge of our weather again today, and the results, like yesterday, are set to be pretty awesome. Most of the region will see sunshine this morning, with the one exception being far SW ME and southern NH where clouds from a low pressure system well to our southwest will be present. Temps will rise into the mid 50’s north and mid 60’s across the coastal plain. Clouds will begin to escape the confines of southwestern regions this afternoon, spilling northeast into the rest of the region, but the system’s precipitation will hold off until tomorrow.
