I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. After several days dominated by cloudy skies, sunshine will make a return today as Jose continues to weaken and move east. Highs will rise into the 70’s across the region as the warm sunshine is counteracted by slightly cooler air moving in from Canada on breezy N/NE winds. No precipitation is expected as drier air moves into the area.

Jose continues to move to our south today, and the thick clouds that continue to overspread our area are attributed to that system. Those clouds won’t be going anywhere too quickly today as Jose drifts slightly closer. Some scattered showers associated with Jose’s outermost rain bands are expected in southern Coastal Maine and southern New Hampshire, but impacts are generally going to be light as the worst of the storm stays well offshore. Clouds and cool northeast winds will keep temps down once again today with highs ranging from the mid 60’s along the coast to the mid 70’s in the north where some breaks of sun are possible.

Plenty of humid, sticky air remains in place today as Irma’s remnants continue to drift slowly through. The combination of moisture and cooling temperatures during the overnight hours results in dense fog, and plenty of it is being observed this morning across the state. Fog will burn off as temps rise this afternoon. Highs will range from the mid 70’s north to near 80 in the south. Skies will be mostly sunny this afternoon before fog once again sweeps inland this evening. We’ll stay mostly dry today with the exception of a possible brief shower in southern NH.

Today’s forecast will be dominated by the remnants of once-mighty Hurricane Irma, now just a weak area of moisture and spin in the upper levels. The main thing we’ll get from Irma’s remnants will be cloud cover which satellite imagery indicates is pretty expansive across the southern half of the region. We’ll also get showers and potentially a thunderstorm or two as the upper level disturbance drifts by overhead. There are already some ongoing showers this morning as seen on radar, but lightning analysis indicates that strike activity is somewhere between minimal and nonexistent. Lightning may pick back up as we get a little bit of daytime heating through the cloud cover this afternoon. The best chance for a shower strong enough to produce lightning will be in the SW part of the region. Areas NE of Augusta and Bethel are likely to remain dry.
Daytime heating through the clouds will bring temps up, but not nearly as much as yesterday. Highs will range from the low 70’s north to around 80 in SW NH. Cooler temps are also possible along the coast where southerly winds will be blowing off the Gulf of Maine. Those southerly winds bringing in cooler and moisture laden air will likely contribute to the development of some fog along the coastline today.

Today will feature morning sunshine gradually becoming obscured by afternoon cloudiness as the remnants of once-mighty hurricane Irma approach from the west. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will form over New Hampshire this afternoon, before weakening and moving into Maine tonight. A slightly better chance for showers/thunderstorms is present tomorrow as the remnant circulation passes overhead. The clouds and showers will bring temps down a little bit, with highs in the low 70’s north and around 80 south.
