I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Much Cooler Today, Clouds Increase Again

Hello everyone!

Today will feature much cooler temps and cloudier skies as a wave of low pressure moves along yesterday’s cold front which is now located to our south. Skies are clear across much of the area as I write this around 6:30 AM, but clouds are quickly moving in from the west ahead of that low. Most folks should catch a nice glimpse of sunrise this morning but overcast conditions will develop shortly thereafter. The precipitation associated with this system will arrive in the CT River valley around 7-8 this evening before spreading east tonight. While most of us will be warm enough to see rain, elevations above 3,000 feet are likely to pick up an inch or two of snow during the early morning hours tomorrow. Tis the season!

High temps today will range from 45 in the north to 55 in the south.

Cooler Air Arrives Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the arrival of cooler air as a cold front crosses the region and Canadian high pressure begins building in from the north. The front is currently working through the mountains and northeastern foothills this morning (Greenville is reporting a 20 mph NW wind behind the front while Bangor is WSW at 5 mph ahead of the front), and will make its way south during the morning. By midday, the front will have passed through the entire region and we’ll all be enjoying cool northwesterly flow.

Precipitation along the front will be moving in from the west as a weak disturbance aloft rides along the boundary. By the time that disturbance gets to our longitude, the front will have moved far enough south that the mountains are likely to stay mostly dry. Southern and central areas can expect a round of showers between roughly 8AM and 12 PM. Another wave will pass along the front later in the afternoon, and will bring another round of rain to southern NH.

Temps today will be falling across the area, so whatever you’re feeling outside now will be your high for the day. By 2 PM, the mountains will be sitting in the upper 40’s, the foothills and northeastern parts of the area in the low to mid 50’s, and far SW ME/S NH in the low to mid 60’s. By 8 PM, temps will have fallen another 5 degrees or so across the area before bottoming out in the low 30’s north and mid to upper 40’s south overnight.

For your enjoyment, here’s a loop of today’s dew point forecast showing the dry air sweeping in from north to south. What a delightful sight!

The Last Summer Airmass Of The Season Arrives Today

Hello everyone!

The last truly summer-like airmass of the season will be arriving behind a warm front today meaning that temps and humidity will be back on the increase. The warm front will have some trouble making it all the way through the region today, which means that there will be a fairly wide range between conditions occurring in the northeastern and southwestern parts of the area.

For the southwest, particularly SW NH, it’s summer’s last hurrah today with temps climbing into the mid to upper 70’s and dew points soaring into the upper 60’s. Some showers and a couple rumbles of thunder are possible as the front moves through midday, but otherwise most of the day should be dry.

For the middle of the area, today will be on the cooler but more humid side. Showers currently ongoing this morning will taper off in the next 2-3 hours before mostly dry weather returns for this afternoon. Highs will generally fall in the mid to upper 60’s.

For the northeast, we’ll retain the feeling of fall until much later this evening. High temps will be on the cooler side, in the mid 50’s to low 60’s, and dew points won’t cross the 60 degree “uncomfortable” threshold until after 10 PM. Showers currently ongoing this morning will take a while to taper off this morning, and will be replaced by another round of showers later this afternoon into this evening.

Everyone goes back to the dry weather tomorrow, with cooler temps following for the end of the week. If you’re up in the mountains above around 2,500 feet or so, Friday will likely bring your first snowflakes. Tis the season!

Clouds Return Today

Hello everyone!

After a lovely couple days under high pressure this weekend, clouds will begin to return ahead of our next disturbance today. Thankfully with winds in the mid/upper levels out of the NW and most of the cloud cover located to our west/southwest, it will take until this evening for most of us to see overcast skies. Temps will remain on the cooler side today as we’re still being influenced by strong Canadian high pressure. Look for highs ranging from 55 in the north to 65 in the south.

Cold Front Brings A Quick Round Of Showers Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature a quick round of showers as a cold front crosses the region from west to east. Ahead of the front this morning, look for clouds to increase from NW to SE. The front will enter the mountains during the late afternoon timeframe before moving SE during the evening and eventually departing the coast a little after sunset. Along the boundary, expect a brief period of showers along with the chance for a rumble or two of thunder. Given the lack of instability, no severe weather is expected.

Both temperatures and humidity will be on the rise today with highs ranging from 75 in the north to a few degrees above 80 in the south.

Calm Weather Returns Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the return of calmer weather as high pressure moves in behind yesterday’s cold front. Aside from some low clouds in the favored mountain upslope zones this morning, today should be mostly sunny. High temps will range from 60 in the north to 75 in the south with dew points falling back into the 40’s. Enjoy the great weather!

Cold Front Brings Clouds And A Few Showers Today

Hello everyone!

A cold front will cross the area today and as it does, expect increased clouds and the development of some showers. The clouds are already here across western parts of the area, and will arrive shortly along the coast. Showers will move into western NH early in the afternoon (around 2-3 PM) before moving east later in the afternoon. Just about everyone will see some rain, but the steadiest and heaviest rain will be in the north. High temps today will range from 70 in the north to a little above 80 in the south.

Quiet Weather Returns Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature quiet weather as high pressure builds in from the west. Satellite imagery shows a far amount of low cloud cover in the favored upslope parts of the mountains as well as in northeastern parts of the area closer to low pressure in New Brunswick. Between the rising sun and the incoming high pressure, expect sunshine to expand over the course of the day. By sunset, just about everyone will see mostly clear skies.

High temps will range from 55 in the north to 75 in southern NH with comfortably low dew points. Enjoy the nice weather!

Turning Cooler Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cooler temps especially for NW parts of the area as a cold front brings temporary relief from the recent warm and humid airmass. The cool air will be arriving in the northern part of the area first, and high temps there are likely to end up around 60 degrees. Farther south, another mild day is expected with high temps in the mid 70’s. Thankfully, dew points will also be on the decline across the area and by this evening we’ll all be enjoying a comfortably dry airmass.

Our cool and dry airmass will be arriving more quickly aloft today than at the surface, which means we’ll have some instability developing especially over NE parts of the region. This instability along with a weak surface boundary will support the development of some showers north and east of Lewiston during the afternoon hours. These showers should be relatively brief and won’t have much overall impact, though a rumble or two of thunder is possible.

More Unseasonably Warm Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature more unseasonably warm and humid weather as we remain on the wrong side of a cold front moving through the Great Lakes. Expect high temps ranging from 70 in the north to 90 in southern NH this afternoon while dew points climb into the mid 60’s. Thankfully this unpleasant airmass will be departing around this time tomorrow with the passage of the aforementioned cold front.

That front will be producing showers and thunderstorms to our west today, some of which will last long enough to arrive in our area later this evening. Expect a band of showers with a few embedded rumbles of thunder to move into the CT Valley around sunset this evening before moving east during the later evening hours. If you’re headed out and about at that time, bring an umbrella but overall this front won’t be causing much trouble.

Cooler air moves back into the region tomorrow while showers redevelop under an upper level low.
