I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Still Cool, Still (Mostly) Cloudy

Hello everyone!

More of the same cool and unsettled weather is on tap for today as an upper level low drifts ever so slowly off to the east. Temps will be a bit warmer than yesterday, but that’s not saying much. In the mountains, look for highs in the low 40’s with low 50’s farther south. Clouds will remain abundant above the region for most of the day, though some sunny breaks are possible especially in NH as we move into the afternoon. Spotty showers will remain confined to northern parts of the area today, with most of us staying dry.

Cold Rain And Mountain Snow Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature continued cold and unsettled conditions as low pressure moves northeast past Cape Cod. Amazingly, we’ll be watching for precip type changes despite the fact that it’s mid-May. The best chance of snowflakes will be above 1,500 feet in the foothills and mountains. The Camden Hills will also get in on the snow. Accumulations will range from nothing in the valleys to over 6″ above 4,000 feet. High temps will range from 35 in the mountains to just above 40 along the coast. Happy spring!

Will it get warm any time soon? That depends largely on your threshold for ‘warm’, but if it’s anywhere above 70, it will likely be a while.

Another Cool, Cloudy, But Mainly Dry Day Today

Hello everyone!

Strong Canadian high pressure remains anchored to our NE this morning while low pressure develops over the Mid Atlantic. The high will hold just enough sway over our weather this morning to allow for some sunshine, especially across NE parts of the area. As the day goes on, expect clouds to once again move in from the southwest. The high will also be feeding cold air southwestward, leading to another day of chilly temps right around 50 region-wide.

Precipitation appears to hold off until the evening hours for SW NH and the overnight hours for Maine. I’ll cover this more tomorrow morning, but be aware that if you’re at an elevation above 1,500 feet or so, this storm will be a snowy one for you. Flakes could even mix down to lower elevations if dynamics are strong enough. Happy spring!

Back To Cool And Unsettled Weather Today

Hello everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the one day of nice weather, because most of us are headed back to our more dreary pattern today ahead of a coastal storm that’s more reminiscent of November than May. Morning sunshine across northern parts of the area will fade quickly this afternoon, but areas NE of Augusta actually should squeeze in a decent day of partial sunshine and temps around 60. Conditions will deteriorate as you head SW, with highs in SW NH struggling to get above 40. Steady rain will also develop here over the next couple hours, continuing through most of the rest of the day. Thankfully, the rain won’t make it that far north, likely sticking south of NH route 101.

The rest of us will get our cold rain starting tomorrow afternoon.

Cool And Quiet Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cool temps and quiet weather as Canadian high pressure rolls in from the west. We still have some northwest flow to deal with this morning, which means that the mountains and areas NW of the mountains will be stuck under a low cloud deck due to upslope flow. Downwind of the mountains, skies are mostly clear (with one neat exception, to be discussed below) and will remain so through this afternoon. High temps will range from 45 in the north to 60 in the south. With NW winds keeping the sea breeze at bay, today will actually be warmer than many recent days for the immediate coast. Enjoy!

The neat exception to the coastal sunshine rule is shown here. Note the band of clouds across Cumberland County, shaped in a triangular formation with one apex just downwind of the Presidential Range. This cloud deck is actually a result of Mount Washington disrupting the airflow! As air hits the mountain, it’s forced to go around it. Once it gets past the mountain, it wants to fill the “gap” in the atmosphere just downwind of the mountain. As air on both sides rushes to fill that gap, convergence ensues, resulting in upward motion. This happens all the time, but today there’s just enough low level moisture to let that small amount of upward motion produce clouds.

The clouds should dissipate with daytime heating in the next couple hours.

Back To The Unsettled Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature more of the unsettled weather we’ve come to expect in recent weeks as low pressure moves north of the area. Most of the steadiest rain will be found over northern parts of the area, closer to the low pressure system. Southern parts of the area may even remain mostly dry, with just a few passing showers this afternoon. Regardless, everyone will have to contend with overcast skies and relatively chilly temps as cold air becomes dammed against the higher terrain. Highs will range from 40 in the north to 60 in the south.

Another Cool And Clear Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will look pretty similar to yesterday in that we’ll enjoy sunny skies, but have to deal with temps that are cooler than most people probably would choose. Skies will be sunniest this morning, with some clouds drifting into the area from the west this afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. High temps will range from 50 along the immediate coast to 55 in the north to 60 for most places in the middle.

Sunny, Cool, And Dry Today

Hello everyone!

Strong Canadian high pressure will be in charge of the weather across the region today. This means that we’ll enjoy dry conditions as well as abundant sunshine, but it also means that warm weather will be on hold. Highs will range from 45 in the north to 60 along the coastal plain. If you add an extra layer or two, today will be a lovely day to get outside. Enjoy it!

Showers And Thunderstorms Arrive This Afternoon

Hello everyone!

In a true sign of the season, we’ll be watching for showers and thunderstorms to pop up ahead of a cold front sliding in from the west this afternoon. No severe weather is expected though some gusty winds are possible given low level dry air. That said, if any storm is headed your way, make sure to duck inside until the lightning threat diminishes. The best chance for storms will be noon-2 PM in the north and mountains, 1-3 PM in the foothills/central areas, and 3-5 PM in southern areas.

Skies will start off with a mix of sun and clouds, becoming cloudier as the front approaches. High temps will range from 55 in the north and along the midcoast to 75 in interior southern NH.

Sunshine!

Hello everyone!

Today will be a very well-earned break from the long stretch of cloudy conditions we’ve dealt with over the past couple weeks. High pressure will nose in from the east which means clear skies and cool temps. Highs will range from 50 along the coast to 65 for most of the rest of the area. Parts of the CT river valley could hit 70 after morning fog burns off. A sea breeze will spread those cooler ocean temps inland this afternoon, so get out and enjoy the warmer temps in the morning. If you’re looking for summer weather, today’s not your day, but we’ll take this one step at a time.
