Hello everyone!

Today’s weather will be dominated by the advance of a seasonably strong spring storm system approaching from the southwest. Ahead of this system, clouds have overspread the region this morning and overcast conditions will remain the rule for the rest of the day. Some patchy drizzle is ongoing over the mountains and near Augusta, but this morning will be generally dry until the main round of precipitation arrives this afternoon.

Precip will begin in SW NH around noon in the form of rain, with rain breaking out in ME soon thereafter. Up in the mountains, just enough cold air has jumped in front of this system to support a period of mixed precipitation especially at higher elevations. This wintry mix will start as freezing rain but will likely change to snow/sleet later in the afternoon as strong upward motion facilitates some cooling aloft. Any accumulations of note will be confined to the higher summits above 3,000 feet.

Rain and wintry mix will fall heavily at times through the afternoon and evening before a line of showers and possibly some thunder moves through during the evening and ushers drier air in from the west.

As with any storm system on the stronger side, we’ll be watching for winds to pick up later today. On a southeast fetch, the Midcoast peninsulas and areas on/northwest of the higher ridges will be most at risk for 40-45 mph winds capable of producing scattered outages. With winds borderline favorable for outages and no leaves on the trees, I’m not expecting widespread issues. Another round of stronger winds is expected tomorrow as cooler air moves into the area from the west/northwest.
