I’m a third-year atmospheric science student at Cornell University who has been blogging about the weather since 2011. While I’m not officially a meteorologist, I have accumulated a bit of experience forecasting both local weather (in western Maine and New Hampshire) as well as national/international weather during my time writing for weather.us and weathermodels.com. I also have experience programming in Python, teaching concepts in weather forecasting, and communicating forecast information to general audiences.

Colder Today As Storm Slides South

Hello everyone!

Good news and bad news today. Good news: a reasonably large snow storm has missed us to the south. The bad news: it will be about 20 degrees colder today compared to yesterday. NW winds will also make it feel cooler today and will likely introduce a few flurries for the mountains. For the rest of us, a mix of sun and clouds along with highs in the 20’s to low 30’s can be expected today. No storms are in sight and warm-up signals are increasing for next week.

Downsloping Brings Toasty Temps Today

Hello everyone!

Temps will soar especially along the coast today as winds turn to the NW and begin to downslope. Downsloping in turn causes sunny skies and warm temps so temps will be rising into the high 30’s/low 40’s region wide, including the mountains under increasingly sunny skies. A secondary cold front moves through this evening so this warm spell looks to be short-lived but more warm temps look to come back next week as the pattern begins to change.

Increasing Clouds Today As Yet Another Storm Approaches

Hello everyone!

Today will feature increasing clouds in advance of our next storm system approaching from the west. Expect sun this morning with clouds rolling in during the lunchtime hours. Highs today will range from the low 20’s up north to near 30 in the south. Snow should wait until the late evening hours before moving into Maine though SW NH could see flakes as early as 3 or 4 this afternoon.

Here is my thinking as to snow accumulations for this event. Watch out for a little ice in southern areas as above freezing air moves in aloft but the deep snowpack keeps the cold locked in at the surface. Warm air does look to move in at the surface down in the Boston area before the precip shuts off so watch for a period of heavy rain tonight which could cause some localized street flooding given all the snow on the ground.

No other storms are in sight as of now.

Snow Moves Out This Morning, Mountain Clouds/Coastal Sun Remains

Hello everyone!

Light snow is moving out this morning as our storm pulls away and we will be left with plentiful clouds for most of the morning hours. Expect snow showers to continue in the mountains through the afternoon where several inches of upslope snow can be expected in the favored areas. Temps in the mountains will be in the upper 20’s. Along the coast, morning clouds will give way to afternoon sun as temps rise into the mid-upper 30’s. Happy spring!

More snow/mixed precipitation should arrive late in the day tomorrow.

Snow Moving In This Evening And Out Early Tomorrow Morning

Hello everyone!

Quick update this evening on our light snow event that is beginning across the region currently and will continue through early tomorrow morning.  Light snow is beginning across southern and western areas right now and will continue to spread east this evening. Since the atmosphere is quite dry at the moment, expect some of the radar returns shown below to not be making it all the way to the ground.

Expect snow to continue through the night tonight before ending early tomorrow morning. Clearing skies can be expected tomorrow along with NW winds and cooler temps. Details on tomorrow’s forecast will come in tomorrow morning’s forecast update.

Just a few minor changes to the snow map this evening, highest snow totals look to be south and east with this one yet again. Another storm heads our way midweek with a warmup too.

More Clouds This Morning, Light Snow Begins This Afternoon

Hello everyone!

Happy meteorological spring!!* Today will feature increasing clouds in the morning followed by clouds and increasing snow in the afternoon/evening hours. Expect all areas to see clouds by around 9 this morning while snow should wait until after 3 this afternoon.

Temps this morning are anywhere from the 10s below zero to single digits above zero warmest where light breezes still blow. Check out yesterday’s post for an explanation on why that is. Temps will rebound quite well today into the lower 20’s north and higher 20’s south.

Total snow accumulation thoughts have not changed much since last night and it still looks like the Boston area will pick up the most snow. Last night’s snow accumulation map still represents what I think will pan out in terms of total snowfall.

Another batch of precip arrives Wednesday, more details later.

Another Light Snow Event Tomorrow Night Through Monday Morning

Hello everyone!

Special update this evening to bring you up to date on yet another storm that will graze us with some light snow tomorrow night into Monday morning. This storm will, like many this winter, develop in such a way that eastern areas as well as southern areas will see the most snow.

As we have seen many times this winter, the storm will be developing too late to bring significant snowfall to the region however, with snow just coming to an end across coastal areas Monday morning, the commute will likely be slick. Snow moves out during the midmorning hours Monday before clearing takes place Monday afternoon.

Here are my thoughts regarding snow accumulations. The Boston area looks to be the jackpot yet again while northern areas miss out.

Another snow event looks to arrive on Wednesday and may involve some mixed precipitation for southern areas. More details later.

Calm And Cold Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature another quiet day in the weather world making this day number three in a row without accumulating snow. The last time this happened was January 20-23! Expect a bitter cold start this morning, where winds have gone calm temps are below zero, and where a light breeze still blows, single digits are widespread.

Once again this morning, we are seeing some very sharp temperature differences caused not by inversions, but very localized changes in wind conditions. Where winds have gone calm, temps have dropped significantly below zero. Where a light breeze still blows, temps are much warmer. Take a look at a few observations from this morning.

Here is a look at region-wide temps this morning. I have circled some of the sharpest couplets in purple as well as the blue and red examples.

radiational cooling 2

Here is the sharpest contrast I could find this morning. The difference between the two locations, approximately 10 miles at nearly the same elevation. The one difference? One station has a 3mph breeze while the other is completely calm.

Temps rebound very quickly this morning as the sun comes up bringing highs into the 10’s up north and 20’s in the south under light NW breezes. Some high clouds are possible by evening across western sections but clear conditions should last throughout the daylight hours today.

Snow makes a return tomorrow evening, I’ll have details in another post tonight.

Clouds Moving Out A High Pressure Takes Control

Hello everyone!

Another pretty mellow day weather wise today as high pressure builds in. Expect light winds, mostly sunny skies, and relatively mild temps. Expect highs in the 10’s up north and 20’s down in the south today which will feel pretty good under the high sun angle of late February. Expect a little dripping from the roofs and trees today as things heat up which will serve as a happy reminder spring really is on the way.

Our next shot at some snow arrives Sunday.

More Clouds Today As Storm Misses South

Hello everyone!

If you need something to cheer you up on yet another bitterly cold morning, a sizeable storm missed us. The storm that brought snow and ice to the deep south will be passing by well offshore and the only impacts we will see will be an increase in clouds especially over southern areas. Areas SE of Boston will get in on some snow accumulating 1-3″. Temps will be cold but not frigid, in the 10’s up north with 20’s south.

Clouds clear out tonight as the storm moves away and sunny but cold conditions look to make a return for tomorrow and into the weekend.

No significant storms are on the horizon as of now but no significant warmups are either.
