Showers Arrive Later Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the arrival of some showers from the west as a cold front prepares to move into the region from Quebec. Look for morning breaks of sun especially along the coast to give way to cloudier skies this afternoon. Showers will arrive from the west during the mid afternoon, and will be most widespread up in the mountains. Folks south of Portland may end up staying mostly dry. Southwesterly winds will pick up ahead of the front and could be rather gusty at times, especially along the coast. High temps won’t feel the wind direction much though, and will remain stuck in the mid 60s for most of the area with some low to mid 70s for southern NH.

Clearing Out Today

Hello everyone!

After a rainy morning, especially along the Midcoast, sunshine will return this afternoon as this storm system races off to the northeast. Showers probably only have another hour or so left over the Midcoast while clouds may stick around until noon or so. But the rest of the day looks awesome across the area with temps slowly falling from early highs in the mid to upper 60s as cooler air moves in.

Mild and Unsettled Again Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature yet another serving of mild and unsettled weather as we remain on the wrong side of a cold front moving at a casual jogger’s pace to the east. Southerly winds ahead of this front are keeping temps in the upper 60s to low 70s this morning, where they will probably stay for much of the day thanks to thick cloud cover. A few brief breaks in the clouds over the coastal plain could boost temps into the mid 70s this afternoon.

This morning, shower activity is focused over southeast-facing slopes of the mountains where air is topographically forced to rise. As we get later into the morning, showers from the front itself will gradually move into NH. With an uninterrupted plume of moisture streaming in straight from the Caribbean, rain could be heavy at times as the front moves though.

It will take until this afternoon for the front to crawl its way into Maine, but as it does, so too will the more widespread shower activity. This slow eastward progress will open the door for some late-day sunshine, and the potential for a very nice sunset, in central/western NH.

Heavy rain will be the primary threat with this frontal system, but there is some nonzero chance for gusty winds or even a tornado if we get enough filtered sunshine to promote more robust thunderstorm development. Right now, the best shot of some severe weather seems to be over NH and far western ME. Just keep half an ear out in case a warning is issued for your area.

Unfortunately, this front never really moves east of our area, so at least some of us will be dealing with clouds and showers through the weekend (mostly near the coast and east of Augusta).

Mild and Unsettled Today

Hello everyone!

A storm system to our west will slide slowly towards our area today, meaning we’ll look for mild temps and increasingly unsettled weather over the course of the day. We already have plenty of clouds moving into the area, and whatever sunny breaks we can manage this morning should be relatively short-lived. We’ll also see plenty of drizzle and light shower activity, some of which is already underway especially in the foothills. So while steady/heavy rain isn’t expected, it will be a damp and unsettled day.

Southerly breezes will keep temps on the warmer side despite the clouds, with highs ranging from the mid 60s right along the Midcoast to the upper 70s over southern NH.

Clouds Start Returning Today

Hello everyone!

Clouds will begin to return today ahead of our next storm system which will be approaching slowly from the west. Clouds will be thickest over the CT Valley and potentially along the Midcoast where I can’t rule out the development of some fog this afternoon. While clouds will be arriving from this next storm today, precip should remain well to our west/northwest. Highs will remain on the cooler side thanks to onshore flow and a bit more cloud cover, ranging from the low 60s along the immediate Midcoast to the low 70s up in the mountains.

Excellent Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature excellent early-fall weather as strong Canadian high pressure slides slowly overhead. Look for sunny skies area-wide with just a couple thin/high clouds arriving from the west this evening. Temps will be pleasantly cool, ranging from the low 60s along the Midcoast to the low 70s over in NH. Winds will slowly turn onshore later this afternoon as the high pressure system slides off to the east.

A Little Bit Unsettled Today

Hello everyone!

We’ll sit in a bit of weather limbo today as a tropical storm develops off the NC coast to our south, high pressure slips offshore to our east, and another cold front starts crossing the Great Lakes to our west. None of these systems will be close enough or strong enough to totally dominate our weather, so they’ll have to share. The tropical storm thankfully looks to be moving northeast away from the coast as it gets going later today. That said, it will influence our weather by adding a lot of moisture to the air (more aloft than at the surface thankfully) to our south. The high pressure system will keep the heaviest/steadiest rain to our south, but won’t be able to keep us entirely dry. That’s because the third system, that cold front over the Great Lakes, will add a south-southeasterly component to the winds which will push the moisture, clouds, and showers from the Gulf of Maine onshore.

Right now, it looks like southern/coastal areas will see the brunt of the clouds and showers, though clouds are thickest over NH this morning. Showers are most likely this afternoon, and while they may be heavy at times they won’t last super long in any given place. Head to the northeastern foothills or mountains for better chances of sun and dry conditions.

The clouds will hold temps down a bit especially near the coast, with highs in the low to mid 60s near the coast and upper 60s to low 70s up north.

Clearing and Cooler Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature clearing skies and cooler temps as drier air moves in from Canada. Look for morning clouds to give way to sunshine relatively soon, especially over NH. By noon, everyone should be enjoying sunshine. A few clouds might try to pop up over southwestern NH, where a shower can’t quite be ruled out later this afternoon. Otherwise though, look for temps in the upper 60s to low 70s and generally great weather.

Potentially Significant Severe Thunderstorms Today

Hello everyone!

Today will be the most exciting weather we’ve had in a while as a cold front appears to slice through the region at just the right time of day with just the right amount of energy to support potentially significant severe weather.

It’s pretty cloudy out there this morning, but we should see some breaks in the overcast as we get closer to midday. By early in the afternoon, temps will range from the mid 70s up north to the low 80s in southern NH with just a few cooler outliers in the mid 60s along the Midcoast.

Radar imagery this morning shows scattered shower activity along the Midcoast with a line of stronger storms up near the Canadian border. Expect both batches of precipitation to weaken and slide east this morning, with mostly dry conditions developing by midday. The primary band of thunderstorms will arrive from the west around 2-3 PM for the mountains before spreading southeast later in the afternoon.

Today’s storms will be capable of producing damaging winds, hail, and possibly even a tornado or two over southern parts of the area. This is of course in addition to the menu of hazards presented by even “garden variety” thunderstorms (lightning and heavy rain). So keep an eye to the sky this afternoon and have a way to receive warnings if they are issued for your area. The strongest storms should be departing offshore by sunset with cooler and drier air filtering in from the north.

Clouds Filter Back In Today

Hello everyone!

Our fast-paced early-fall weather pattern continues to keep things interesting as our next storm system arrives from the west starting this afternoon. That means morning sunshine will gradually fade to clouds this afternoon, with the potential for some showers especially over in northern NH. Winds will flip around to the southeast which will help keep temps a bit cooler, ranging from the low/mid 60s along the coast and up north to the mid 70s in western NH.
