Warmer and Brighter Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature warmer and brighter weather as the storm to our northeast steadily moves away from the area. Light northwesterly breezes will keep the mountains a bit cooler than the coast, but looking at satellite imagery this morning, there is not much in the way of upslope cloudiness to be found. We’ve pretty much just run out of moisture to force up and over the Whites and Longfellows. Under sunny skies, the mountains will top out around freezing today while the southern coast makes a run at 50. The light northwesterly flow will keep sea breezes at bay, so this will actually be one of the warmer days so far along the immediate shorelines.

Enjoy the beautiful early spring weather and get outside if you can!

Chilly and Unsettled Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature seasonably chilly temperatures and unsettled weather as yesterday morning’s storm doesn’t have enough “room” in the Atlantic to get fully out of our way. It’s currently stuck spinning near the Quebec/New Brunswick border and will keep cool air and unsettled weather in the mix for us today. Skies this morning are overcast in the mountains thanks to upslope flow and partly to mostly cloudy along the coast as residual moisture sticks around despite the drying influence of downsloping.

As we start to get a little more daytime heating in the next couple hours, low clouds may briefly mix out along the coast to allow for a period of sunshine. However, once we add a little more heat to the surface, instability-driven clouds will pop back up and by this afternoon, most of us will be mostly cloudy once again. Some of these afternoon clouds will drop snow showers which may briefly reduce visibility, even near the coast, even though accumulations are not expected outside the usual upslope spots in the mountains.

High temps today will range from the low 20s up north to the mid 30s along the coast.

Rain and Snow Clear Out Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature the gradual departure of rain and snow from the storm system currently moving through the Gulf of Maine. As the system moves off to the northeast, cooler air will filter in from Quebec and lead to raindrops changing over to snowflakes up in the mountains. Outside of an inch or two on the higher summits, no accumulation is expected. Rain will taper off to showers midday as drier air starts to move in from the west, but it’ll take a while to fully clear the region of low-level moisture, so don’t expect much in the way of sunshine until possibly later this evening. With rich low-level moisture and north-northwesterly winds, expect robust upslope snow showers to continue through the afternoon in the mountains.

High temps today will be reached during the morning, and will range from the mid 30s up north to around 50 along the coast. Temps will stay more or less steady for most of the day before dropping this afternoon as NW winds carry cooler air into the region and thick clouds temper the influence of the strong April sun.

Mild Weather Returns Ahead of Next Storm System

Hello everyone!

Another storm system is on the way this evening, and mild air will be moving up the coast on its eastern flank today. Look for southwesterly winds to pick up throughout the day, boosting temps into the high 50s north and mid/high 60s in southern NH. The Midcoast will be considerably cooler, in the mid/upper 40s, due to influences from the cold Gulf of Maine.

Any sunshine you see this morning will be short-lived as clouds move into the region from the west ahead of the front. Patchy showers/drizzle may develop in some areas this afternoon, but the main round of rain will hold off until after sunset. We’re scheduled to pick up another 0.5-1.5″ of rain with this system which is great news for our lingering precipitation deficit from a dry winter. That said, with a few other recent systems helping to make up for lost time and the seasonal melt of our snowpack in the mountains, rivers are about as full as they should be this time of year. Thus additional rain may lead to some minor flooding in the most flood-prone areas tonight and tomorrow. No major issues are expected.

Rain will end with some rumbles of thunder along the coast and some snowflakes up in the mountains tomorrow.

Cooler and Breezy Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cooler temps and breezy conditions as yesterday’s storm moves off into Canada. Cooler air will move into our area on the back side of this storm, so high temps today will be observed mid/late morning before the colder air overpowers the strong late-March sun this afternoon. Look for highs ranging from the mid/high 20s north to the low 40s south. The cold air will be accompanied by gusty NW winds which could get up as high as 40-45 mph midday. This is near the lower end of what I’d consider troublesome from a power outage perspective, so while a few folks will likely end up in the dark at some point today, major issues are not expected. It helps that the leaves aren’t on the trees yet. With strong upslope/downslope winds, our usual sky cover pattern of overcast in the mountains and partly/mostly sunny along the coast looks to be a good forecast for today. Some of those mountain clouds will drop snow showers, especially this morning.

Seasonably Strong Spring Storm Arrives Today

Hello everyone!

Today’s weather will be dominated by the advance of a seasonably strong spring storm system approaching from the southwest. Ahead of this system, clouds have overspread the region this morning and overcast conditions will remain the rule for the rest of the day. Some patchy drizzle is ongoing over the mountains and near Augusta, but this morning will be generally dry until the main round of precipitation arrives this afternoon.

Precip will begin in SW NH around noon in the form of rain, with rain breaking out in ME soon thereafter. Up in the mountains, just enough cold air has jumped in front of this system to support a period of mixed precipitation especially at higher elevations. This wintry mix will start as freezing rain but will likely change to snow/sleet later in the afternoon as strong upward motion facilitates some cooling aloft. Any accumulations of note will be confined to the higher summits above 3,000 feet.

Rain and wintry mix will fall heavily at times through the afternoon and evening before a line of showers and possibly some thunder moves through during the evening and ushers drier air in from the west.

As with any storm system on the stronger side, we’ll be watching for winds to pick up later today. On a southeast fetch, the Midcoast peninsulas and areas on/northwest of the higher ridges will be most at risk for 40-45 mph winds capable of producing scattered outages. With winds borderline favorable for outages and no leaves on the trees, I’m not expecting widespread issues. Another round of stronger winds is expected tomorrow as cooler air moves into the area from the west/northwest.

A Bit Cooler Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature cooler temps and clearer skies as cooler air moves into the region behind yesterday’s cold front. That said, temps will still be above normal for this time of year given the lack of nearby Arctic air. Look for highs ranging from around 60 in southern NH to around 45 along the Midcoast and up north. Mostly sunny skies are expected outside the mountains where some upslope clouds are noted on satellite imagery this morning. As NW flow slackens this afternoon, expect clouds to fade here as well.

Unsettled Spring Weather Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature unsettled spring weather as low pressure moves up the Saint Lawrence Valley to our west. Onshore southerly flow ahead of this system will push cool and moisture-rich air into the region this morning. One result has been fog which will be slow to burn off this morning. Another result will be the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms especially this afternoon over parts of the area that can sneak some sunshine in during the midday hours. No severe weather is expected, but some storms may produce briefly gusty winds. For those who miss out on the thunderstorm-induced gusty winds, the low up in Quebec has you covered. Gusts across the area will climb into the 30-40 mph range as the system goes by this afternoon. That should be low enough to avoid most outage issues. High temps will range from the low/mid 50s along the Midcoast to near 70 in central NH.

Cloudier but Still Warm Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature increased cloud cover as a weak storm system approaches from the west. Clouds are already increasing across the area as fog burns off near the surface. While filtered sun slowly transitions to overcast skies, temps will remain on the warmer side of normal today. Look for highs ranging from the mid 40s along the midcoast to the mid 50s up north to the mid 60s in southern/central NH. This storm system will bring some rain to the area, but it will mostly fall after sunset.

Warmth Continues Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature continued warm weather as southerly/southwesterly winds continue to push warmer air in our direction. After morning fog, dense in spots over the Midcoast, burns off, expect mostly sunny skies across the area. This sunshine will help boost temps into the upper 50s north and upper 60s in southern NH. Most of southern Maine will end up in the low/mid 60s with mid 50s along the coastline and upper 40s along the midcoast.
