Todays outlook 1-2-12

New England

Today will feature partly cloudy skies with highs in the 40s in most of Maine with the exception of the north and the mountains. In the North and Mountains, temps will peak out a little above freezing. In southern NE, 50s can be expected. Gusty NW winds

Mid Atlantic

50s in VA. 40s to around 50 elsewhere. Partly cloudy. Gusty NW winds.

Quick update regarding tonights forecast

As I run through the model data, I see I will need to tweak a few things in the “Nowcast” for tonight. A Nowcast is a very short range outlook that is only for a few hours out.

Nowcast for New England

Midnight:
Clearing with a few breaks in the clouds. Winds shifting to the WNW at 10 mph. Temperatures will dip into the low 20s as opposed to around 30.

6 am tomorrow:
Low clouds with winds shifting more to the north.

Nowcast for Midcoast

Midnight:
Clear except for a few scattered low clouds in the North. Winds shifting from W to WNW.

6 am tomorrow:
Clear. Light and Variable winds for most of the area but light W winds in the far North.

Todays weather 12-29-11

Today will feature a clear sky with cold temperatures. Temperatures will start off in the low teens for the coast and the lower single digits inland. Wind chills will be around 9 at the coast and well below zero inland.

Winds will die down as the day goes on.

Todays weather 12-28-11

Today will feature clearing skies with a break in the winds from around 7-8am. Then winds will resume except that they will be from the WNW brining in cooler air. Temperatures will top out near 50 at daybreak before a dramatic cool down this afternoon.

Radar update as of 4:05 pm EST 12-27-11

As of 4:05, the northern edge of the precipitation is closing in on Boston MA-Springfield MA-Glens falls NY-Syracuse NY.

Wind forecasts have been lowered to 30 gusts 45. Still enough to cause scattered outages.

All other forecasts have not changed at this point.

Radar 12:30am EST 12-27-11

As of 1230, the northern edge of the precipitation shield extends from NY, NY to Binghamton NY to Buffalo NY.

FORECAST

Sustained @ 35 Gusting to around 50

Rain…

Will overspread the area after dark and continue to increase in intensity and areal coverage peaking around midnight.

Stormy new year

Christmas is now came and gone but we all start the New years rush. Travelling and partying, staying up until  midnight and of course for us meteorologists the start to the notorious snowy months of January and Febuary. We are watching several storms in the coming week. The first will hit on wednesday with heavy rain and strong winds. Number 2 on the storm production line will hit Friday into New Years Eve with light snow.
