Strong To Severe Thunderstorms Arrive Today

Hello everyone!

First off, a quick apology for the lack of posts over the past few days. I was out on the water and thought I’d have cell service to post, but alas I didn’t.

A strong cold front is on the way today, and strong thunderstorms will accompany it as it traverses the region from west to east. Showers and storms are already ongoing this morning in New Hampshire and far northern Maine. Expect these storms to weaken a little as they move east before lunchtime. Afterwards, look for storms to redevelop along the front itself, currently located in western New York. These storms will be the ones to watch for severe weather. The primary threat today will be damaging winds, but an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out southwest of Portland. Flash flooding will also be a concern with today’s storms due to the deep moisture in place across the area ahead of the front. Storms will clear the coast this evening, with clearing skies expected tonight.

Temps will be tricky to predict today due to uncertainties related to cloud cover. Satellite imagery shows widespread clouds across much of Maine and Northern NH this morning, with sunshine across southern NH. Temps will be warmest in those sunny areas, with highs in the mid to upper 80’s expected. Farther north under the cloud cover, highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s will be more common, though warmer temps are possible if some sun does develop.

Another Summer Stunner

Hello everyone!

More stunning Maine summer weather is on tap for today as Canadian high pressure remains in control of our weather. Hurricane Chris is passing several hundred miles east of the area this morning, and its impacts on our area are twofold. First, northerly winds on the system’s western side are keeping our cool/dry air pipeline open. Second, swells from the system have arrived this morning and will create hazardous conditions (and great surfing!) at exposed shoreline points.

With astronomical high tides occurring this month at the point in Earth’s orbit that’s closest to the sun (perigee), some waves that typically would remain in the intertidal zone may drift up into low-lying coastal lawns/roads. Aside from the brief splashover/flooding, and the rip current risk, Chris will remain a low impact system for our area as it rockets towards Newfoundland.

Skies are mainly sunny this morning, with NW winds from Chris setting up an upslope/downslope pattern where the only part of the area with cloud cover is the northwestern slopes of the mountains. These clouds should decrease somewhat in areal coverage later this afternoon as temps warm up. Speaking of high temps, look for highs in the upper 60’s north to the upper 70’s south. No precipitation is expected.

A Beautiful Summer Day Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature picture perfect Maine summer weather as Canadian high pressure moves overhead. Mostly sunny skies will be the rule for the majority of the area today, with morning clouds across the Midcoast and foothills clearing out this afternoon. Temps will rise to around 70 in the north and around 80 farther south, with the coast splitting the difference around 75. No precipitation is expected. Enjoy!

Chance Of Afternoon/Evening Showers And Storms Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature warm temps and the chance for afternoon/evening showers and storms as a cold front approaches the region from the northwest. Partly cloudy skies are in place for much of the region this morning, with some parts of the mountains seeing more clouds than sun. Look for sunshine to develop in some of these areas around midday, before clouds start popping up this afternoon due to developing instability. Those clouds will begin to produce showers over the mountains after lunch. Showers will grow into storms during the mid/late afternoon hours as they move southeast towards the coast. Westerly winds will limit the influence of the marine layer today, so while storms will be weakening as they approach the shoreline, cells stand a better than usual chance of arriving at their destination intact today. Storms will move offshore this evening with dry NW flow developing behind the front. Highs will range from around 70 in the north to around 90 in the south.

Sunny And Warmer Today

Hello everyone!

Today will feature sunny skies and warmer temps as westerly breezes kick in and limit the influence of the Gulf of Maine on our temperatures. Clouds associated with a cold front in Quebec will remain north of the region today, and sunny skies will be the rule area-wide as a result. Look for high temps to range from the low 80’s near Camden to the low 90’s in the typical inland warm spots, with cooler temps in the upper 80’s also expected in the mountains. The region will remain dry today under the influence of strong high pressure. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

The Heatwave Has Broken!

Hello everyone!

Today the region will reap the rewards of the heatwave’s demise as cool air continues to pour in from Canada. Skies will remain sunny through the day today, and temps will rise comfortably to within a few degrees of 70 depending on location. Enjoy the beautiful day, after this past stretch, we’ve earned it!

Tropical Downpours Usher In Heat Relief Today

Hello everyone!

You may notice it’s raining this morning, widespread shower/thunderstorm activity is noted across the region as of 8 AM. If you’re not in on the rain yet, it’s coming soon. This morning’s rains are fairly heavy, owing to the amount of moisture available to be squeezed out of the atmosphere. These downpours will sweep offshore early this afternoon, and behind them, NW breezes will chart a course straight from low dew point heaven. Look for Td’s (shorthand for Dew Point) to drop from the low 70’s this morning to  the 40’s by this evening. NW breezes will also set up an upslope/downslope pattern for cloud cover, with cloudy conditions hanging tough in the mountains and sunny skies developing along the coastal plain. Highs today will range from the low 60’s in the north to the mid 80’s in the south.

Another Hot One Today

Hello everyone!

Today will once again feature heat and humidity as a massive ridge of high pressure sits overhead. Skies are mainly sunny this morning, and will remain that way through the afternoon hours allowing for plenty of daytime heating. Look for temps to rise into the low to mid 90’s for most, with mid to upper 80’s for the typical cooler locations along the coast and in the mountains.  Dew points within a few degrees of 70 (typically regarded as the threshold for “oppressive” humidity) will once again make today’s heat feel even worse than it already is, especially in southern areas. Today will remain mostly dry, with late day shower/storm chances highest in the mountains.

Thankfully, today will be the last day of full heat and humidity as a strong cold front approaches the region tomorrow morning. Showers and storms ahead of the front will begin late this evening in the mountains, and will expand southeast towards the coast tomorrow morning. Depending on the amount of sunshine that coastal areas can get before the front arrives tomorrow, storms may be severe with damaging winds the primary threat. However, even if minimal sunshine occurs and storms remain generally below severe limits, frequent lightning and heavy rain will pose threats until the front clears the coast early tomorrow afternoon. Dew points will fall to “glorious” levels by Saturday, with values in the 40’s expected region-wide. The countdown is on!

Heat And Humidity Redevelop Along The Coast Today

Hello everyone!

I hope coastal folks who don’t enjoy stifling heat and humidity enjoyed their break in the action yesterday. A weak frontal boundary passed through the region last night, and winds behind the boundary have turned westerly. These offshore breezes will offset any attempts at a marine circulation, which means even the coast gets to suffer today. Mainly sunny skies will drive temps into the upper 80’s/lower 90’s for most, with the peninsulas of the Midcoast and the mountains remaining a little cooler, in the mid 80’s. Dew points will remain firmly in the oppressive category today, with heat index values soaring over 95 for a good part of the area. Heat advisories have been issued as a result, so remember to stay hydrated. A late day shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out in the southern part of the area, but once again skies should remain mostly dry through this evening with no strong trigger mechanism to get air rising to form thunderstorms.

Relief From The Heat Near The Coast Today

Hello everyone!

Another hot day is in store for much of the region today, though a backdoor cold front will be providing some relief from the heat for the coastline. Morning clouds will gradually clear out this afternoon, with rising temperatures across the area. High pressure is located to our east this morning, which means we’ll see more of an onshore component to the winds today, especially across Maine and southeast New Hampshire. Western NH will remain locked into southwesterly flow which will drive another day of near-100 degree temperatures along with oppressive humidity. Temperatures will be much more moderate along the coast, with highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. A late day shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out in the western mountains, but no widespread activity is expected.
