Hello everyone!

Cool and rainy weather is set to take over the region today, with the cool portion of the forecast coming in from the northeast, and the rainy part of the forecast coming in from the southwest. The rain is associated with moisture streaming north from the remnants of Michael, so it could be heavy at times.

Radar imagery shows this rain moving into New Hampshire this morning, with Maine set to get in on the action over the next 1-2 hours. Look for just plain old steady rain through the middle part of the day as that tropical moisture gets lifted up and over our low-level cold air. The approach of a cold front this evening will result in a transition to more showery precipitation, with the passage of that front eventually shutting down the rain tonight.

Today’s rains will add up to a couple of inches, which won’t be enough for any major/widespread flooding concerns. Do keep an eye out though for low-lying spots typically susceptible to flooding, as they’ll probably be seeing some water today.

Highs will be on the chillier side north of the front, which will include everyone except SW NH. Temps in the mountains will sit around 45, with temps farther south around 55. Meanwhile in SW NH and the CT river valley, highs will top out in the low to mid 70’s!

Fall break is now over, and I’m back at home base in Ithaca, meaning that updates will resume as per usual. Likewise, Mother Nature is also set to cease pretending like it’s summer vacation today, with a backdoor cold front bringing an end to unusually warm fall temps. Our airmass this morning is warm and muggy across the area, with dew points in the 60’s more typical of July than October.

By sunset, most of Maine will be dropping through the 50’s into the 40’s as breezy NE winds kick in. However, before that, temps will rise into the low to mid 80’s for most of SW ME and NH. Along the front, showers and storms are possible this afternoon/evening as those warm temps and muggy air will actually lead to some instability. Those showers/storms will wane in intensity after sunset.

Today will feature cool temps and cloudy skies as we sit north of a warm frontal boundary. Most of these clouds will be in the low levels, meaning that fog is also a possibility, especially this morning. Precipitation by and large won’t be an issue, though scattered showers are expected as that warm front lifts a little closer. If you’re looking for the best shot at sunshine, head to the midcoast, where you’ll also find the warmest temps around 55. The rest of the area will range between 45 in the mountains and 50 elsewhere in terms of temps.

You may have noticed I wasn’t able to get an update out this morning. My apologies for that! I was up in the White Mountains taking in a stunning sunrise as part of resting and recuperating during fall break. I have similar, though slightly less spectacular, plans for tomorrow morning, so I’ll post the forecast now to keep everyone up to date. Tomorrow, Sunday, will feature plenty of clouds and temps split dramatically between north and south. Both of these are due to the fact that a frontal boundary will be sitting overhead for most of the day. The front won’t be strong enough to get much in the way of precipitation going, but it will be strong enough to keep cloud cover fairly dense for most of the area. Cool air north of the front will limit highs in the mountains to around 50, while warm air south of the front will let temps climb above 70 in southern NH. The best chance for showers will be in the mountains.

Hello everyone!

Canadian high pressure is building into the area this morning with cool and dry air arriving on northerly winds as a result. As high pressure builds in at the surface, upper level disturbances will be passing by aloft. This means that some mid/upper level cloudiness is possible today, especially in the west, though most of the day will feature plenty of sunshine. Despite that sunshine, the colder airmass means highs won’t be all that warm today. Expect temps a little above 60 in the south and a little above 50 in the north. No precipitation is expected.

A cold front is located to our northwest this morning, and will approach the area this afternoon before moving offshore tonight. This means that we’re looking at some low cloud cover this morning as the front moves moisture into the region. That low cloud cover is producing some drizzle this morning which should clear up a bit heading into the midday hours. However, not much in the way of sunny breaks will be found outside of the mountains and SW NH.

The front’s line of showers will arrive this afternoon, likely around 2 in the northern mountains. As the showers move southeast towards the coast, they’ll slow down and weaken as the front gets farther away from its parent area of low pressure in Hudson Bay. That said, folks in the south should expect at least the chance for showers this evening, even if it’s not guaranteed.

The low clouds will keep temps generally on the cooler side ranging from 60 in the northeast to 70 in the southwest.

Today will feature the departure of yesterday’s rain, though a lack of strong, dry NW winds means that low clouds will be able to remain stubbornly in place for much of the day. The best chance for sun will be later this afternoon/evening along the coastal plain. Highs will be seasonably cool, ranging from the upper 50’s north to the mid 60’s south. After a few showers depart this morning, mainly dry conditions are expected.

A warm front extends from Lake Ontario east through New York City and Nantucket this morning. If you draw that out on your mental map , you’ll see a big dip in the front east of the Appalachians. Longtime readers of this blog/watchers of Maine weather will recognize this signature as Cold Air Damming. In the wintertime, CAD brings notoriously hard to predict ice/sleet, but in the fall when temps aren’t cold enough for that yet, we just have dreary weather with cool temps and steady rain.

That steady rain is more in drizzle form than full on rain form this morning, but heavier precip will move in this evening as an area of low pressure approaches. Some embedded thunder is possible with that round of rain. Skies will be overcast today with the rain, which will also contribute to cool temps. Highs will range from the low 40’s in the north to the mid 50’s along the SE NH coastline. NE breezes will make those temps feel even a bit cooler than that. Enjoy!

Look for this rain to slowly settle to the south through the day today, eventually moving out of the area late this afternoon. Highs will be on the cooler side, generally sitting in the low 50’s for most of the area.
